Music to Heather Mills' Ears

Heather Mills' approval ratings seem to be going up, at least on this side of the pond.

The Dancing with the Stars contestant's growing popularity was confirmed Tuesday during an interview with E! News' Ryan Seacrest, when a listener called in to apologize for having judged Mills solely on the plethora of negative press reports about her divorce from Paul McCartney.

"I'm ashamed that I had a judgment against her based on everything that you read in the newspapers, that she was after his money, and, come on, everyone was down on Heather Mills," the listener, who identified herself as "Pat," said. (Listen to the full audio from the interview.)

"But she has won me over, and I can admit it, that I had formed a bad opinion about her. I am embarrassed, actually. I would love to apologize to her. And America should apologize. And the people should apologize to her. She was wrongfully treated."

A vindicated Mills became emotional as she listened to the caller's kind words.

"Hoooo, that's great," she said, her voice cracking.

"This is your life, where people judge you based on hearsay," Seacrest commented.

"Yes, it's just amazing," Mills said tearfully. "I had a choice. I could have gone down that path of lowering myself to everyone else's level and proven my innocence—that all I did was fall in love with someone madly and give up my life for seven years.

"If I was a gold digger I would be a very wealthy woman now, and I'm not."

Mills, 39, said that all the bad press she's endured has also reflected poorly on her estranged husband.

"The biggest insult was to Paul, because it's just like saying he's so stupid that he would just be with somebody like that," she said.

The former couple reportedly reached a settlement in their divorce last month, with Mills allegedly accepting $56 million in cash and property plus joint custody of Beatrice, her three-year-old daughter with the ex-Beatle.

Though Mills did not specifically comment on the reported settlement Tuesday, she said she would soon begin commuting back and forth to the U.K. to be with her daughter.

"Starting in a few weeks, I will start flying back and forth to England every week to be with my daughter as she goes back to school," Mills said. "My husband and I share 50/50 custody, because I've always felt the father is just as important as the mother."

She said she would be departing from Los Angeles on Tuesday nights after Dancing with the Stars and returning on Sunday evenings, "mostly practicing in the aisles on the plane."

This week, Mills had to be fitted for a new prosthetic leg to enable her to "bounce" on her left side, making the elaborate jive choreography more manageable.

Though the artificial limb was designed and fitted in only two days, as opposed to the usual four-week turnaround, it didn't seem to hurt Mills' moves, as she and her partner ended the night with 24 points Monday, putting them in a four-way tie for first place.

The next round of eliminations is slated to take place during Tuesday's results show on ABC, which will also feature performances from Josh Groban, Ciara and Survivor.
