Weiland's Wife: Faulty Meds Led to Meltdown
According to Mary Weiland, the inclination to torch her hubby's wardrobe was all in her head.
The wife of Velvet Revolver frontman Scott Weiland was arrested in the wee hours of Sunday morning after allegedly setting fire to her man's clothes outside of their Toluca Lake, California, home, part of a chain of events that Mary Weiland is now blaming on a problem with the medication she takes to treat bipolar disorder.
"The weekend's difficulties were brought on by a reaction to an imbalance in medications used to treat my bipolar disorder," the 31-year-old wife and mother of two said in a statement released by the couple's spokeswoman, Bryn Bridenthal.
"Reports that we were fighting at the Graciela Hotel are untrue. Scott was simply trying to help me calm down. I want to make it very clear that he did not hurt me in any way.
"For lack of a better expression, I was unstable and just 'lost it.'"
Police received a report Saturday at 10 p.m. of a "female burning clothes," according to the arrest report. Arriving at the scene, officers found a trash can full of Scott Weiland's literally flaming wardrobe, which the former Stone Temple Pilots rocker told police was worth $10,000.
Mary Weiland was booked on suspicion of felony arson vandalism and released several hours later on $50,000 bail. Meanwhile, the couple's two children, ages four and six, were placed in the custody of friends and later released to Scott Weiland.
As of Wednesday, the District Attorney's Office had yet to file any charges.
The fiery episode wasn't the Weilands' first run-in with the cops that day, however. Police were also called Saturday afternoon to the posh Graciela Hotel in Burbank after it was reported that the couple were scuffling in their suite.
"Both rooms had damage and items scattered, broken plates and things. It was looking definitely like items were deliberately destroyed," Burbank Police spokesman Sergeant Mathew Ferguson said, adding that it would be up to the hotel to press vandalism charges.
In her statement, Mary Weiland also said that she and Scott have already compensated the Graciela for its troubles.
"Payment for the damages to the Graciela Hotel has already been made," she said. "The gracious staff and management have accepted our apologies and welcome us back in the future."
Especially now that the couple need far less closet space.
Scott and Mary Weiland swapped vows in May 2000 while Scott was still in the thick of his myriad drug and legal woes, which plagued the duo off and on until the alt-rocker successfully completed yet another stint in court-ordered rehab in July 2005, avoiding a prison sentence for a 2003 heroin and cocaine-possession bust in the process.
The now-39-year-old musician pleaded guilty in 2001 to spousal abuse after roughing Mary up during an argument at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Scott Weiland filed for divorce in 2003, citing irreconcilable differences, but the pair obviously managed to reconcile.
Considering Mary Weiland apparently has had her own demons to battle, she seems willing to put the past behind them, saying, "After nearly seven years of marriage I am truly grateful to have a loving husband, drug-free for three and a half years now, who is able to care for me during this challenging time."
