Soul Train Stops at Beyoncé Station
The Soul Train Music Awards have a brand new conductor—a dreamy one.
Beyoncé Knowles received a leading three nominations from the 21st annual awards show held Mar. 10 in Los Angeles, including a nod for Best Female Album for B'Day.
The awards-show staple is also up this year for Best Female R&B/Soul Single for her chart-topping "Irreplaceable." The music video for the single rounded out her nominations, receiving a nod for the Michael Jackson Award for Best R&B, Soul or Rap Video.
Her steepest competition at the kudofest is Mary J. Blige, who scored two nominations and who is primed to dominate Sunday's Grammy Awards, with a leading eight nominations going into that ceremony.
As far as the Soul Train nominations, The Breakthrough belter is up against Knowles for both Best Female Album and Best Female R&B/Soul Single for her powerhouse "Take Me As I Am."
Balancing out the ladies' night are John Legend, Chris Brown, Ne-Yo and Yung Joc, each of who managed to nab two nods for their musical troubles.
Last year's Best Male Album and Single champ Legend returns to defend his title, this time around for Once Again and "Save Room."
His nominations are mirrored by Brown, whose self-titled album and hit "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)" are both vying for hardware.
Ne-Yo managed to score nods for his song "Sexy Love," as well as for Best New Artist, where he'll go up against Yung Joc. The latter artist also nabbed a nomination for Best R&B, Soul or Rap Dance Cut for "It's Goin' Down."
Other big name nominees include the Pussycat Dolls, whose "Stickwitu" nabbed a nod; Jay-Z, who vies against better half Beyoncé in the Best Video category for "Show Me What You Got"; Jamie Foxx, whose Unpredictable is up for Best Soul Album; and Gnarls Barkley, who scored a Best Group Album for the ubiquitous St. Elsewhere.
Should Beyoncé dominate the awards as she did the nominations, it could make for some awkward podium moments. Solo chart-topper LeToya, an original but subsequently ousted member of Destiny's Child, is hosting the ceremony alongside Omarion.
While the awards will be doled out Mar. 10 at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, they won't be broadcast until the following week, though a network and exact airdate have not yet been confirmed.
