From Sunshine to Grey's at SAGs

Little Miss Sunshine didn't employ the most actors or boast the biggest stars. It just won. Again.

The low-key road-trip comedy was the big movie winner at the 13th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday in Los Angeles, with its cast claiming the top prize for motion-picture ensemble work.

"I'd like to thank the engineers at Volkswagen for making a beautiful van back in 1969 that is so comfortable, so safe," Sunshine player Greg Kinnear quipped of his four-wheeled costar.

Overall, the SAG Awards looked a lot like the recent Golden Globes, with Helen Mirren claiming two trophies, America Ferrera earning kudos for Ugly Betty and Grey's Anatomy being named TV's top drama.

There was, however, one distinct difference between the SAGs and the Globes: no backstage blurtings by Grey's star Isaiah Washington.

Washington's publicist told E! News last week that the under-fire actor was "not available to attend" the SAG Awards.

This, after Washington announced he was entering a treatment program to, as he not so directly put it, understand why he's been throwing around a particular antigay slur.

Last fall, during an on-set scuffle with Patrick Dempsey, Washington referred to fellow costar T.R. Knight as a "faggot," Knight himself told talk-host Ellen DeGeneres. The word resurfaced backstage at the Globes when, in front of his stunned-silent castmates, Washington said it to deny he'd said it.

While Washington wasn't at the SAGs, he was not forgotten. Series star Ellen Pompeo, who accepted the show's ensemble trophy, made a point of paying tribute to "our castmembers who are not here." Oddly, though, she couldn't remember Washington's name without prodding.

Grey's Chandra Wilson, a SAG winner for drama series acting, referenced the Washington situation in her own acceptance speech. And, for a change, got a laugh out of the matter.

"First of all, it's about those 10 castmembers sitting over there, and the other one in rehab," Wilson said to applause. "I mean, you all just keep me together."

The cast of The Office, meanwhile, seemed all present and accounted for as that show was honored with the SAG for best TV comedy series ensemble.

Series star Steve Carell got as big a kick out of receiving the trophy from the reunited Mary Tyler Moore Show players as receiving the trophy itself: "This is quite the honor having these people present this to us," he said.

Carell double-dipped on the night with a bookend SAG as part of the Little Miss Sunshine cast.

The Queen's Mirren and The Last King of Scotland's Forest Whitaker continued their Oscar-season reigns, with SAGs for best lead movie actress and actor, respectively. Both are considered favorites at the upcoming Oscars.

Mirren picked up a second SAG, as she did at the Globes, for the HBO miniseries Elizabeth I.

"What an incredible night for me personally," said Mirren in a sound bite that came across as perfectly humble and heartfelt on the TBS/TNT simulcast.

Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson didn't let Dreamgirls' Best Picture Oscar snub slow their own Oscar express trains. Murphy and Hudson, angling for a Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress Academy Award, respectively, followed up their Globe wins with SAG wins.

In the TV categories, Grey's Wilson and House's Hugh Laurie earned awards for acting in drama series; 30 Rock's Alec Baldwin and Ferrera, for their comedy series work.

"I am completely out of things to say," Ferrera giggled after picking up her latest statuette.

The ensemble win for Little Miss Sunshine, coming over fellow Best Picture Oscar nominees Babel and The Departed, would seem to bolster the comedy's chances the top Academy Award prize. And if it had scored a Best Director Oscar nomination (but it didn't), it might now be considered the leading contender for Best Picture. That's because in the previous seven award seasons, SAG's ensemble winner has gone on to become Oscar's Best Picture winner four times.

Elsewhere, Julie Andrews, a past Oscar winner for Mary Poppins, was presented with SAG's Life Achievement Award.
