Mills McCartney Sis Takes Swat at Beatle
So much for taking it to court—the Mills sisters apparently prefer to take it to the Internet.
Fiona Mills, the younger sister of Heather Mills McCartney, has lashed out at her estranged brother-in-law, accusing Paul McCartney of refusing protection for his soon-to-be ex-wife and their three-year-old daughter, even in the wake of increasing numbers of death threats leveled against the family.
And as for the death threats themselves, she blames those on the media.
Mills expressed her dismay over the lack of security detail—a perk she hints is readily available to other members of the McCartney clan—in a posting on her sister's official Website late Monday.
"After eight months of reading disgusting, untrue and hurtful stories about my sister Heather, I feel enough is enough, and I would like to try and set the record straight," Mills wrote, adding that it was those tabloid stories that compromised the safety of her sister and niece Beatrice.
"They are receiving death threats, not because she is getting a divorce, but because some of the British tabloids decided from day one that they wish to destroy her, create hatred towards he and profit out of doing so."
Mills went on to say that, despite the "vicious agenda" of the papers, Mills McCartney and her daughter "no longer receive the protection that would be afforded to any other member of the McCartney family facing such threats."
While a harsh condemnation in its own right, the message used to be harsher still.
According to the Daily Mail, the posting was edited overnight at the behest of Mills McCartney's divorce lawyers, presumably attempting to minimize either the PR damage or potential legal backlash—the former Beatle and his estranged wife are due back in court next month to decide, quite aptly, whether McCartney should pay for her security.
Mills' posting originally attacked not only the tabloids' agendas, but claimed that her sister's "husband is not concerned enough to help" ward off the death threats or protect his family.
To remedy the possibly too-damning accusation, the post was entirely removed from the Website, per the Daily Mail, for several hours Monday night before reappearing, in edited form, this morning.
Of course, Mills' ire wasn't strictly reserved for 64-year-old music icon. The tabloids got their due as well.
"We have been accused of creating publicity stunts and leaking information to get publicity," Mills wrote. "This is not true and is a ridiculous accusation considering all the publicity is negative. It is not hard to work out where the inaccurate information is coming from."
Mills, who followed up her letter by debunking several rumors about her sister and offering what she said were the more accurate stories behind the tales, included a plea on behalf of her sister to both the media and the public to quite simply "give her a break."
"Heather's not a gold digger, liar or self-publicist for people to tear apart—she's a human being and a mother who has feelings and cares what her daughter will read in the future and it is deeply hurtful to hear and read all the spiteful things that are said about her."
Last week it was reported that McCartney and the 39-year-old Mills McCartney had reached a confidential $63.2 million settlement in their divorce. The anti-land-mine activist and her legal team have adamantly denied the reports.
