Heroes Big; Charlie Sheen Bigger

Heroes cleared 24 with a single bound. Charlie Sheen was another matter.

Going head-to-head for the first time on Monday night, NBC's capeless wonders soared above Jack Bauer's mushroom cloud on Fox, Nielsen Media Research stats show.

From 9 to 10 p.m., Heroes averaged 14.9 million sci-fi-fantasy fans to 24's 14.5 million doomsday enthusiasts.

The most watched man of the hour, though, was Sheen, whose low-tech CBS sitcom, Two and a Half Men, occupied 15.9 million during its 9-9:30 p.m. time slot.

Overall, CBS ran third in the hour (14.4 million), thanks to the usual number of tune outs inspired by The New Adventures of Old Christine (12.8 million), which airs from 9:30 to 10 p.m.

CBS' CSI: Miami (18.9 million) maintained its distinction as Monday's most watched show of any hour.

Oddly, the Heroes-24 bout didn't take much out of either heavyweight. Heroes did about what it'd been doing (only a little better) prior to its recent five-week layoff; 24 did about what it'd been doing (only a little better) compared to the same time last year.

As for Sheen, he not only did his thing, he did it his thing before 1 million more viewers than usual.

The Heroes might want to figure out the secret to that guy's power.

The numbers from Monday night will be reflected in next week's Nielsen rankings. In the meantime, here are some ratings tidbits from the TV week ended Sunday:

  • Wednesday's American Idol (fourth place, 36.9 million) was big—unfortunately for the guy from Seattle seen absorbing Simon Cowell's "bush-baby" crack.
  • Tuesday's American Idol (third place, 37.4 million) was bigger—unfortunately for the singing juggler from Minnesota seen flopping as a singer and a juggler.
  • Sunday's Super Bowl-determining AFC Championship football game (second place, 46.7 million) was bigger than just about everything and bigger than any AFC Championship since 1986—unfortunately for the team from New England seen blowing the big halftime lead.
  • Mark Harmon fans do not care about American Idol, thankyouverymuch, and will continue to watch CBS' NCIS (10th place, 16 million) on Tuesday nights until the remote controls are pried out of their cold, dead hands. Of course, given the show's older-skewing audience, that sad scene might play out sooner rather than later.
  • Behind the scenes, Grey's Anatomy (sixth place, 21.9 million) is a mess. But on Thursdays, it can still beat CSI (seventh place, 21.4 million).
  • ABC's Ugly Betty (14th place, 14.1 million) got a Golden Globe. CBS' Shark (12th place, 15.1 million) got to call itself the week's most watched freshman series.
  • ABC's Men in Trees (24th place, 10.4 million) is getting good at hanging from Grey's Anatomy's branches.
  • NBC's musical edition of Scrubs (55th place, 6.5 million—down 12 percent from its season average) flopped.
  • What happens when ABC doesn't air Lost opposite Idol on Wednesdays? Not much, as evidenced by Knights of Prosperity (94th place, 3.8 million) and In Case of Emergency (101st place, 3.4 million).
  • Donald Trump watch: NBC's The Apprentice (53rd place, 6.9 million) hit a season low.
  • Rosie O'Donnell watch: ABC's The View enjoyed its most watched week in nearly three years. (This, per ratings for the week of Jan. 8, the latest daytime numbers available.)
  • A Saturday-night AMC screening of Jeremiah Johnson (4.05 million viewers), a 35-year-old Robert Redford movie that's been run countless times on TV and has been available for years on video, was the week's most watched cable movie, even besting Disney Channel's High School Musical (4.02 million). Scientists were believed to be huddling to determine an explanation.
  • Stephen Colbert goosed the Thursday edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor (3 million viewers); Bill O'Reilly goosed the Thursday edition of Comedy Central's The Colbert Report (1.7 million viewers).
  • The second-season premiere of Bravo's The Real Housewives of Orange County (1.1 million viewers) set a series record for oglers.

CBS and Fox were the week's big network winners, thanks to the monster-size football game and supersize Idols, respectively.

CBS took the crown as the week's most watched network, averaging 16.5 million viewers; Fox prevailed as the highest-rated network among 18-to-49-year-olds.

Fox (15.2 million) ran second in total viewers. NBC (9.3 million) and ABC (8.8 million) couldn't stay close.

The CW renewed Everybody Hates Chris (116th place, 2.2 million—for a rerun), got season-high numbers out of Smallville (75th place, 5.3 million) and still lagged behind Univision, 3.9 million viewers to 2.9 million viewers.

Here's a look at the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

2. AFC Championship Game (New England vs. Indianapolis), CBS, 46.7 million viewers

4. American Idol (Wed.), Fox, 36.9 million viewers
