There's no time like the start of a new year to make good on those self-improvement resolutions.

Lindsay Lohan has checked into a Los Angeles rehab center, E! Online has confirmed.

"I have made a proactive decision to take care of my personal health," Lohan said in a statement released by publicist Leslie Sloane Zelnik. "I appreciate your well wishes and ask that you please respect my privacy at this time."

Better make sure Lohan's mother gets the memo.

The 20-year-old starlet's latest move comes a month after mom Dina told E! News' Ryan Seacrest that her daughter was attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, prompting Lohan to admit she had been part of the program for a year. On Dec. 11, she told People she hadn't had a drink in seven days.

Actually, Dina Lohan has already spoken out about Lindsay's latest step in the right direction, as well, telling Star magazine how proud she is of her daughter's decision.

"She's really in a good place right now, spiritually and mentally," Dina said. "She's in an amazing, phenomenal place. She's 20 and she's solid, and she's doing what she needs to do. I don't know that many people who are that secure. It's all about her, and getting back on track. She's fine—she's amazingly fine."

Us Weekly reported that the actor arrived Wednesday afternoon at the Wonderland Center in Los Angeles' Laurel Canyon neighborhood, pulling up to the facility in a blacked-out SUV.

Lohan endured a topsy-turvy 2006, publicity-wise. While the Mean Girls star showed up in such  high-profile ensemble dramas as A Prairie Home Companion and Bobby, her performances tended to be overshadowed by reports of wild partying, health scares and literal run-ins with the paparazzi.

Barely two weeks ago, she had her appendix removed, her third time admitted to the hospital in the past six months.

In September, Lohan slipped and broke her wrist in two places during a New York Fashion Week event, and in July, she was treated for heat exhaustion at an L.A. hospital.

Lohan's rehab stint comes just two days after she made the scene at Prince's Golden Globes after-party at the Regent Beverly Wilshire hotel. E! Online senior editor Marc Malkin reported that Lohan was spotted looking somewhat off-kilter. She was smiling, sources said, but at one point, she grabbed a stranger and asked, "Can you help me find my friends? I can't find my friends."
