Beckham Gets a Kick Out of L.A.
Los Angeles better brace itself for a British invasion: Posh and Becks are coming to town.
David Beckham confirmed Thursday that he would be leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season in order to play for the Los Angeles Galaxy, in what is being called the biggest deal in sporting history, with team officials placing his salary and endorsements at $250 million over five years.
"After discussing several options with my family and advisers to either stay here at Madrid or join other major British and European clubs, I have decided to join the Los Angeles Galaxy and play in the MLS from August this year," the soccer star said in a statement.
The move comes after Victoria Beckham was spotted house hunting in Beverly Hills last month, sparking rumors that the couple was considering relocating to the Southern California area with their three sons, seven-year-old Brooklyn, four-year-old Romeo and 21-month-old Cruz.
The Beckham brand is huge across Europe, Africa and Asia and the couple's move to Los Angeles could be exactly what they need to break into the U.S. market.
Beckham already operates a soccer academy in L.A., as well as in London, while the former Posh Spice has been working on expanding her fashion line in the United States and recently directed a photo shoot for her close friend Katie Holmes.
Despite her new proximity to Hollywood movers and shakers, don't look for the erstwhile Spice Girl to return to performing. After enjoying little success with her post-girl group solo career, Victoria told London's Sunday Mirror in February 2006 that she was "never going to sing again, unless it was a chance to do something with the Spice Girls."
Nor is the mother of three aspiring to launch an acting career. Though numerous published reports recently claimed that Tom Cruise had cast his wife's pal as an alien bride in a new movie about Scientology, Victoria scoffed at those rumors in an interview with the Mirror last month.
"It's quite hilarious for two reasons. Firstly, you'll never see me on screen again because I can't bloody act to save my life! And secondly, although I get offered quite a few parts, I'd never do it as I wouldn't want to wear anything the wardrobe department would put me in."
(A rep for Cruise denied the project ever existed.)
Meanwhile, the addition of Beckham to Major League Soccer is seen as the move that will finally get the United States to show an interest in the sport, with the Galaxy already selling 1,000 season tickets in the hours immediately after the deal was announced.
"David Beckham will have a greater impact on soccer in America than any athlete has ever had on a sport globally," said Timothy J. Leiweke, president and CEO of Anschutz Entertainment Group, which owns the Galaxy. "David is truly the only individual that can build the bridge between soccer in America and the rest of the world."
Sounds like a feature film in the making.
