Oprah Does Oscar
Oprah Winfrey is encroaching on Barbara Walters' territory. Luckily, neither star has a blog...or a combover.
The queen of daytime and 1986 Academy Award nominee for The Color Purple is set to host her first ever prime-time Oscar special, aptly, though not too creatively, titled The Oprah Winfrey Oscar Special.
The hourlong bonanza will be appropriately star-studded and, by the looks of things, require minimum output from Winfrey herself.
While the talk show maven will both host and executive produce the special, she's enlisted Oscar-winning A-listers to perform the not so arduous task of interviewing fellow Oscar-winning A-listers of their choice.
Winfrey's showbiz BFF Julia Roberts opted to conduct her interview with her Ocean's Eleven and Twelve costar George Clooney in the comfort of his Los Angeles home; Nicole Kidman will film her sit-down with longtime pal and recent wedding guest Russell Crowe at the Beverly Hills Hotel; and Jamie Foxx will hone his reporting skills with his idol, Sidney Poitier, on the very stage where the veteran actor took home his 1963 Oscar for Lilies of the Field.
The special is set to air on ABC Feb. 22. That's four days before the ceremony—a scheduling decision perhaps intended to avoid having the Winfrey-powered special tread on the toes of the network's other signature Oscar-themed show special hosted by Walters.
The subjects for Walters' annual Kleenex-fest have yet to be announced, but the interviews always air on the night of the Academy Awards.
Winfrey, meanwhile, is expected to continue with her tradition of filming a live Oprah Winfrey Show from the Kodak Theater the morning after the ceremony. Winfrey has traditionally snagged the Best Actor and Best Actress winners to join her on the post-mortem show.
The 79th Annual Academy Awards, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, take place Feb. 25.
