Oprah's Studio Sued over Fall
It seems some people will stop at nothing to see Oprah Winfrey in person—even at the expense of their fellow fans.
A woman who attended an April taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show has sued Winfrey's Harpo Studios, alleging that she was shoved down a flight of stairs as other guests rushed for seats.
Tanya Milner claimed in her lawsuit that she suffered "sever [sic] and permanent injuries" as a result of her fall, which allegedly occurred after audience members were told they could seat themselves, causing a frenzied scramble in which she was knocked off balance.
Though Milner didn't specify exactly what her injuries entailed, she said that overcrowding in the waiting area and failure by the studio to properly supervise audience members contributed to her fall.
Because of the studio's alleged negligence, she claimed she was unable to attend to her "usual duties and affairs of life," and "will in the future continue to suffer pain and suffering and disability."
Milner was seeking more than $50,000 in damages.
Harpo Studios had no comment on the lawsuit. As for Winfrey, herself, we're guessing she has other matters on her mind.
Earlier this week, the Queen of Daytime officially opened her new $40 million school for disadvantaged girls in South Africa.
Though Winfrey has drawn criticism for launching such a lavish project abroad from those who argue that charity should begin at home, she is sticking to her guns and pledging to provide the "best school in the world" for her pupils—152 young girls she handpicked for enrollment.
"Say what you will about the American educational system—it does work," she told Newsweek. "If you are a child in the United States, you can get an education."
Meanwhile, Winfrey is also launching a pair of reality shows for ABC, tentatively titled Oprah Winfrey's The Big Give and Your Money or Your Life.
Both shows focus on the theme of helping others in need.
