Mills McCartney Makes Nice

Better late than never.

While her public image is all but irreparably tarnished back in England, Heather Mills McCartney is on full-scale damage control here in the U.S., taking to the airwaves to clear her name in the wake of damning tabloid reports on her mid-divorce behavior.

In the two-night interview with Extra, Mills McCartney claims she plans to never marry again and works overtime defending herself against allegations that she engaged in tabloid mudslinging to secure a portion of her estranged Beatle husband's $1.6 billion fortune.

"I'm a good mother—I'm a good person," she said, disputing what she deemed to be the two biggest misconceptions about her. "I fell in love for the right reason. I fell in love unconditionally."

"Eighty-five percent of my income goes to charity," she told the show. "The word gold digger doesn't go with that...If I was a gold digger, I would have a lot of money in my bank account...I'd be worth millions and millions."

The 38-year-old anti-land mine activist also denied the latest rumor making the rounds—that she has become romantically involved with her oft-photographed trainer, Ben Amigoni.

"He is not my lover," she said. "I haven't got a lover. At the moment, I'm focusing on my daughter. It's totally made up!"

As for her daughter with Paul McCartney—three-year-old Beatrice, whose custody arrangements have not yet been determined—Mills McCartney calls the tot her "greatest accomplishment" and described her tumultuous road to pregnancy.

"I tried for a long, long time...two ectopic pregnancies and six miscarriages. They told me I could never have children."

Mills McCartney also spoke out about her portrayal in the British press, which has degenerated since she and Paul McCartney announced their split last May to outright contempt. She insists her ice-queen persona has been created entirely by the media.

"Of course I have a sense of humor," she told the entertainment newsmagazine. "People don't get to see that side of me."

By anyone's standards, Mills McCartney seems to have gotten a raw deal from the British tabloids.

Several papers (against which, she has subsequently filed suit) printed photos over the summer of the former model in topless, salacious poses, with one publication going so far as to allege she once worked as a call girl—an accusation which even led her estranged husband to rise to her defense.

As a result of the constant hounding by the press, she has taken to carrying a camcorder with her whenever she leaves her house—to potentially use the harassing footage in court.

Still, Mills McCartney told Extra that it seems the British public, if not the British press, hasn't entirely written her off.

"I have had so much public support...people hugging me in the streets...I didn't know that many people cared," she said. "You get to know who your friends are, and I haven't lost any friends."

However, Mills McCartney doesn't directly comment on the divorce proceedings, including the most controversial of the couple's postsplit goings-on—namely, the 13-page deposition reportedly given by Mills McCartney in which she alleged physical and verbal abuse at the hands of Paul McCartney. She has since claimed the papers, printed in two British tabloids, had been falsified.

For his part, McCartney denied the damning claims, releasing a statement saying he would "vigorously defend himself" against them in court. He later told BBC Radio that he would conduct the rest of the divorce with "dignity," because it was "intensely personal and I prefer to keep it that way."

The 64-year-old rock legend filed for divorce in July, citing Mills McCartney's "unreasonable behavior." McCartney's nearly $1.6 billion fortune is apparently up for grabs, as the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement prior to their 2002 vow swap.

Whatever the outcome of the split, it's likely to be Mills McCartney's last time in divorce court.

When asked by Extra if she would ever marry again, she responded with a resounding "Never."

The two-part interview airs Monday and Tuesday.
