Nicole Richie Weighs In on Surgery Rumor

As far as Nicole Richie is concerned, the latest rumors concerning her lightweight status can be summed up in one word: ridiculous.

The reality star spoke up via her MySpace page Tuesday, denying that she was the subject of a New York Post blind item Monday claiming "a Hollywood starlet" underwent gastric bypass surgery and then, after slimming down too much, had it reversed.

"It's pathetic of Page Six to insinuate I have done this," Richie wrote. "Anyone that knows anything about this surgery would know that, legally, you must be at least 100 pounds overweight to even have the surgery done, and is a serious, life-changing procedure—not one to throw around as a joke or rumor."

Richie then reminded readers about her recent announcement to the contrary.

"I've given a statement I am in the process of putting on weight, and that should be enough," said the 5'2" Simple Life star, who was weighing in at around 90 pounds last month. "It's a shame to hear that instead of hearing supportive words, someone needs to spin it into some negative, absurd way."

The daughter of Grammy-winning singer Lionel Richie checked into a private facility late last month to undergo diagnostic testing and figure out just why she has had such a hard time putting on pounds.

"She is working with a team of doctors and specialists whose focus is nutrition," her publicist told E! News last month. "It is important to Nicole that she achieve this goal in a healthy way, [but] this is not a treatment for an eating disorder."

This week's Post item stated that the celeb in question was having a gastric band removed "during a recent four-day stint at a health clinic."

Richie's publicist called the idea that the newspaper was talking about her client "ridiculous."

"It is not Nicole," the rep told People. "There are a ton of 'Hollywood starlets.' "

While production on the fifth season of The Simple Life was put on hold when Richie took a timeout, she has since told producers of the E! series that she is ready to work, and they are hammering out a schedule with her and Paris Hilton. (E! Online is a division of E! Networks.)

The new season will feature the on-again pals pulling duty as camp counselors.
