Cruise: In Like a Lion
Tom Cruise has a game plan when it comes to paying the bills for his lavish nuptials.
The actor has accepted a starring role in the Robert Redford-directed Lions for Lambs, his first role since he and producing partner Paula Wagner took over United Artists, Daily Variety reports.
Redford and Meryl Streep also star in the film, which centers on a platoon of U.S. troops stationed in Iraq. Cruise plays a congressman whose life becomes intertwined with a journalist's (Streep).
United Artists is financing the film, which is expected to begin production early next year. A release date is targeted for fall 2007.
Meanwhile, the groom-to-be touched down in Rome Monday, in preparation for his weekend wedding to Katie Holmes, which is anticipated to be taking place at Odescalchi Castle on Lake Bracciano, north of the Italian capital.
Cruise, along with 10 guests, including his children and mother, arrived in the city via private jet from Los Angeles.
On Tuesday, he was spotted whisking away from the luxurious Hassler Hotel in a van with tinted windows, according to published reports.
Holmes was said to be in Rome as well, but had not been spotted.
While the site of the wedding has not been confirmed, the mayor of Bracciano has reportedly imposed a $1,500 "paparazzi tax" on photographers and film crews who want to shoot from the windows and balconies of the town's city hall, which overlook the castle.
A spokesperson for the mayor told People magazine that the fee was fair.
"We're just covering our costs," Alessandra Marini told the magazine. "Police and garbage collectors are having to work overtime to prepare the town for the Cruise wedding. This is the biggest event we've ever handled."
Meanwhile, Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported that Cruise's representatives requested that officials impose a wedding-day flight ban over the castle to prevent paparazzi from taking to helicopters. The request was reportedly turned down.
Though by now, it's common knowledge that the soon-to-be newlyweds will be wearing Armani on their wedding day, they've also recently stocked up on chic undergarments, presumably in anticipation of their wedding night.
According to E! Online's own Marc Malkin, Cruise recently dropped $315 on fancy Egyptian cotton boxer shorts from GrigioPerla, while MSNBC reports that Holmes spent $3,000 on La Perla lingerie at West Hollywood boutique Le Bra.
