De Niro, Fiddy: Meet the Costars
They may be working on a drama, but the casting directors of New Orleans apparently have a sense of humor.
How else to explain the inarguably odd onscreen coupling of Robert De Niro and 50 Cent in the upcoming cop thriller?
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the two-time Academy Award winner and the "In Da Club" rapper play narcotics cops who become unwitting partners in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
De Niro's character is a veteran officer who believes his partner was killed during the devastating flood, only to discover that he was actually shot to death. Teamed with a new partner, played by Fiddy, the unlikely twosome begins uncovering rampant corruption within their ranks.
The indie film was originally set in L.A. and called Microwave Park, before undergoing an overhaul with a new setting and, mercifully, new name.
Tim Hunter, whose directing credits include the teenage pulse-raiser River's Edge and episodes of House, Cold Case and Deadwood, will helm the thriller.
New Orleans is expected to kick off production in the eponymous city in February.
While De Niro has recently engaged in a flurry of film shoots, he hasn't been seen on the big screen since the 2005 thriller Hide and Seek. The veteran thesp returns to cineplexes next month alongside Matt Damon and Angelina Jolie in the CIA thriller—sense a theme?—The Good Shepherd, which De Niro also directed.
As for Eminem's protégé, it'll be his third time hitting the silver screen.
Fiddy made his debut in the semi-biographical Get Rich or Die Tryin' last year, for which he was listed in the credits under his real name, Curtis Jackson.
He recently wrapped production on the war drama Home of the Brave, in which he plays a soldier readjusting to life after a lengthy tour of duty in Iraq. Samuel L. Jackson, Jessica Biel and Christina Ricci costar in the pic, slated for release in January.
