Dancing Stars Hit the Road
You can see your Idols live and cheer for people who think they can dance. And soon, you'll be able to watch the stars hoofin' it across the ballroom floor at an arena near you.
It was announced Wednesday that a select group of celebrity competitors from the first three seasons of Dancing with the Stars are heading out on a 38-city national tour this winter.
The latest addition to the hit-TV-show-turned-mega-marketing-opportunity performance genre kicks off Dec. 19 in San Diego and will feature season-one fave and ex-New Kid on the Blocker Joey McIntyre, season-two finalist Lisa Rinna and winner Drew Lachey and season three's Willa Ford, Joey Lawrence and Harry Hamlin.
Let's just say, Rinna must hold a lot of sway with the producers.
Tickets go on sale Nov. 4. If he doesn't get axed next week, Lawrence—with his polite attitude and naughty hips—would still at that point have a chance of being crowned champion of the hit ABC show's third season, making the tour lineup just that much more of a draw.
Standing in Lawrence's way, now that Jerry Springer was booted Wednesday, are Mario Lopez, Emmitt Smith and Monique Coleman.
All the celebs participating in the tour, except for Hamlin and McIntyre, will be paired with their original professional dance partners from the show.
"The tour gives us an unprecedented opportunity to evolve the Dancing brand," Paul Telegdy, senior VP of BBC Worldwide Programming & Production said. (What, you thought Americans came up with the winning concept?)
"As the current number one network show, it is evident that our next step should be to take Dancing on the road," Telegdy said. "The production qualities of the television show are undoubtedly a key component to its success, and we are confident that our partnership with AEG Live will ensure the tour will mirror this high standard that the public rightly associate with the brand."
Don't tell Telegdy that what might actually draw an average 19 million people a week to Dancing with the Stars is morbid where-are-they-now curiosity and the newfound love this country has for cranky British judges.
Of course, the dancing can be rather lovely at times, and last week's Tuesday performance show didn't pull in 21.3 million viewers because people love a good laugh. Wednesday's elimination show may have attracted 19.2 million because those same people like to revel in others' discomfort for short amounts of time…but Tuesdays are really all about the dancing!
Meanwhile, promoters can only hope that Dancing with the Stars—The Tour pays off similarly to the perennially sold-out America Idols Live Tour, the fifth installment of which hit arenas this summer. Fox also helped launch the So You Think You Can Dance Tour this year, which, like the Idol tour, featured the show's top 10 finalists.
