Lil Wayne's Latest Rap
Lil Wayne's apparently in a li'l bit of trouble.
The hip-hopster, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter, may face criminal charges for allegedly inciting a melee during a sold-out performance Thursday night at Baltimore's Morgan State University that left three women injured.
Per the Baltimore Sun, university officials claim Lil Wayne or an unidentified member of his posse the money into the crowd of 4,000 during a homecoming concert at the school's Hill Field House.
As fans scurried for the cash, two 20-year-old women sustained leg injuries and had to be transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital. A third female student was roughed up but reportedly refused medical help, while a fourth fainted.
In the aftermath, Morgan State authorities not only banned the 24-year-old New Orleans emcee from ever performing on campus again but also launched a criminal probe to determine whether charges should be brought.
"We're evaluating it from a public safety standpoint to a criminal standpoint," university police Chief Adrian Wiggins told the Sun.
According to Morgan State spokesman Clinton Coleman, the perpetrator tossed mostly dollar bills into the crowd, along with some $5, $10 and $20 notes. University officials say they don't know why the rapper, who records for Cash Money Records, or one of his pals decided to pull the stunt.
"It was as dangerous a thing to do as standing in a crowded movie theater and shouting, 'fire.' It is something we regret that he did. We regret the injuries that were caused. And we're happy that most of the people in the crowd acted responsibly."
A rep at Cash Money Records, a unit of Universal Music Group, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
This is not the first time Lil Wayne has run afoul of the law. In August, the Grammy nominee, whose handles also include Birdman Jr., Young Tune and Wheezy F., was busted in Atlanta for marijuana possession. He was released on bond and a hearing in that case is pending.
Thursday's gig, which also featured Busta Rhymes, came hours after Lil Wayne pulled down three BET Hip-Hop Award nominations: Hip-Hop CD of the Year for his platinum-selling Tha Carter II, Lyricist of the Year and Hip-Hop MVP of the Year.
The ceremony, the first organized by the cable network, is set to be taped in Atlanta on Nov. 12 and air on Nov. 15.
