Keith Urban's Rehab Rewind
Keith Urban's life may really be like a country song—unfortunately, he's singing a familiar refrain.
The superstar country singer voluntarily checked himself into a rehab center Thursday night with his wife of four months, Nicole Kidman, by his side.
"I deeply regret the hurt this has caused Nicole and the ones that love and support me," the Grammy winner said in a statement. "One can never let one's guard down on recovery, and I'm afraid that I have.
The New Zealand-born heartthrob, who turns 39 next week, has candidly discussed his battle with cocaine addiction. However, his publicist said Friday that Urban was currently seeking treatment for alcohol abuse.
The name and location of the facility were not disclosed, but the couple has called Nashville home since tying the knot this summer.
"With the strength and unwavering support I am blessed to have from my wife, family and friends, I am determined and resolved to a positive outcome."
To accommodate Urban's recovery, all scheduled appearances for his upcoming album, Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, have been canceled, with the singer even pulling out of a planned appearance at the CMA Awards Nov. 6. Urban is nominated for four awards at the ceremony, including the top prize, Entertainer of the Year.
Although he's bowed out of the promotional circuit, his rehab stint is not expected to affect the CD's Nov. 7 release date.
In 1998, Urban admitted to freebasing cocaine and entered Nashville's Cumberland Heights treatment center.
The following year he seemed back on track, releasing his first solo album. Since then, things seem to have only gotten better for the multiplatinum artist.
On June 25, he and Kidman wed in a private ceremony near the Oscar winner's family home in Sydney. Earlier this year, Urban won the Grammy for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for his megahit single "You'll Think of Me" and was named Male Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Country Music.
