Axl's Artsy Lawsuit
Axl Rose took John Lennon home with him and may not have paid enough for the privilege.
An art broker is suing the Guns N' Roses frontman for $1.15 million, claiming that Rose reneged on a deal to pay $2.36 million for a portrait of Lennon by Pop Art master Andy Warhol. Instead, according to the lawsuit filed Sept. 11 in Los Angeles Superior Court, Rose has only coughed up $1.21 million and is refusing to pay more.
The broker, Acquire d'Arte, stated in the complaint that it had negotiated with a New York gallery to bump the price of the painting down from $2.65 million to $2.36 million especially for Rose, but were then informed by the rocker's manager that the "November Rain" purveyor did not have the funds and felt that "the painting was not worth the price he had agreed to pay."
"It's my opinion that Axl Rose is the victim of some fraud or misrepresentation here," Rose's lawyer, Howard Weitzman, told the Associated Press, suggesting that his client may not have been fully aware of all of the strings attached to the deal.
Perhaps Rose will have no problem shelling out more money once GNR's long-awaited new album, Chinese Democracy, is released--an event that Rose has repeatedly said will occur in 2006.
But is the heavy metal icon just using his illusion?
Rose told New York magazine while backstage at the MTV Video Music Awards--where he provided the finale theatrics--that the $13 million album is still on track to be released this year and that all of the delays are due to his yen to get things just right.
"It's not about being a control freak," he said. "It's about being maybe smart enough to go, 'No, that's a bad idea.' That's all it's about--keeping the ability to at least have a shot as opposed to something that's just an obvious disaster. I want to make a good record. I don't want to throw a brick. This cannot be Shaq at the free-throw line."
Spoken like a true, bitter Lakers fan.
Anyway, GNR hit the road last weekend, kicking off a string of shows filled with old hits and a handful of new material Sept. 16 in Las Vegas.
