Matt, "Mama's Family" Have Friends

Matthew Perry can still bring it. As can Mama.

The Ron Clark Story, a TNT biopic starring Perry as a teacher out to school challenging charges, was the most watched cable show for the TV week ended Sunday. Its premiere screening averaged 6.8 million viewers, per Nielsen Media Research.

For Perry, the made-for-TV movie was his first number one TV hit, on cable or broadcast TV, since he zinged zingers on Friends.

Also proving herself still potent: Mama Harper.

The hunched-over matriarch of Mama's Family propped up the barely watched network formerly known as PAX on Saturday night when a rerun marathon of the belated 1983-1990 sitcom scored a combined 5 million viewers.

The six episodes averaged 830,000; by comparison, the redubbed i network averaged only 650,000 for the week. Most impressively, the Mama's Family marathon audience grew from 547,000 for the first episode at 8 p.m. to 1 million for the fifth episode at 10 p.m.

Viewership for the sixth and final episode fell to 917,000. It aired at 10:30 p.m., and presumably fell victim to lights-out restrictions at assisted-living facilities.

Mama's Family starred Vicki Lawrence, Ken Berry and Vicki Lawrence's old-lady wig. Its first season will be preserved on DVD with a two-disc set due out on Sept. 26, according to Amazon.com.

Long a staple of cable, Mama's Family will now be seen Monday-Thursday, on the i network. Perry, meanwhile, will next be seen on the new NBC series, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, premiering in September.

Vicki Lawrence's old-lady wig, meanwhile, is currently being seen in the theatrical experience Vicki Lawrence and Mama: A Two-Woman Show.

Elsewhere:

A&E's Dog the Bounty Hunter closed out its third season with an island wedding, a shocking death--and a combined 8 million viewers for the final two episodes. Fox's So You Think You Can Dance (third place, 10.1 million) overtook NBC's America's Got Talent (fifth place, 9.7 million) for summertime reality bragging rights. The Thursday results episode of America's Got Talent, nonetheless, enticed a season-high 8.5 million (11th place). Stand-up Josh Blue tried on his Last Comic Standing crown before 7.7 million subjects (20th place). CBS reality shows Big Brother and Rock Star: Supernova both enjoyed their best nights on Tuesday, scoring with 7.5 million (22nd place) and 6.3 million viewers (37th place), respectively. A new episode of Psych did better on USA (4.8 million) than a slightly used episode of Psych on NBC (78th place, 4 million). So as to keep things interesting perhaps, a slightly used episode of Kyle XY did better on ABC (80th place, 3.9 million) than a new episode of Kyle XY on ABC Family (2.2 million). A little more than 2 million suckers, sorry, viewers watched a 30-minute infomercial, sorry, preview of Fox's new fall season (112th place).

Once again, CBS' crime-show reruns proved unbeatable, even in the face of NBC's preseason football. CBS was the week's most watched network, averaging 7.3 million. It was trailed by NBC (6.6 million), and ABC and Fox (each with 5.5 million).

Mama's Family or no, the little lowercase i finished behind Univision (3.2 million), UPN (2 million), the WB (1.8 million) and Telemundo (820,000).

Here's a look at the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:
