McPhee Goes for Broke
Another bad break for Katharine McPhee.
Just days after joining the American Idols Live tour following her recovery from bronchitis and laryngitis, the second-place finisher is back on the disabled list after tripping backstage and fracturing her foot before a concert in North Carolina.
Despite the injury, McPhee took the stage in slippers to perform her two solo numbers. X-rays taken after the show revealed a hairline fracture in her left foot, her publicist at RCA Records said.
Though McPhee is "in discomfort," according to the rep, she plans to continue on the tour, which wraps up Sept. 24 in Pennsylvania.
The aspiring singer already missed the first three weeks of the Idol trek after being put on total vocal rest by her doctor.
Her absence stirred up numerous speculations, including the theory that a reoccurrence of her bulimia had ruined her voice, or that she thought she was too good for Idol.
However, when McPhee was finally able to speak her mind during a July 27 stint as View cohost, she assured her fans that she had simply been following her doctor's orders.
"People speculated that I was making a movie, and that I was better than American Idol. I am so grateful for what American Idol did for me. And I miss those people on the tour," the 22-year-old Los Angeles native said.
"People thought the bulimia was the reason I was set back, but it's just not true. I just got sick and I was overworked."
Following her View appearance, she was scheduled to make her tour debut in Pittsburgh on July 27, but her flight was canceled due to poor weather.
Instead, she joined the other finalists in Washington, D.C., on July 28 for a meet-and-greet with President George W. Bush in the Oval Office--an Idol first. Later that night, she finally took the stage for the first time, though she declined to participate in any group numbers, stressing that she still needed to rest her voice.
Once the tour wraps, McPhee has a full schedule ahead of her.
Her debut album is slated to be released Nov. 14--the same day as freshman albums from Idol champ Taylor Hicks and finalist Kellie Pickler.
McPhee has also signed on to coproduce the play Red Herring, which debuts at the New York International Fringe Festival later this month.
