FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, June 28, 2006
BLINDSIDED: Barbara Walters stating she feels "betrayed" by Star Jones Reynolds' claim to People magazine that she "feel[s] like [she] was fired" from The View and revealing that the show's producers made the decision last fall not to renew Reynolds' contract after research showed that viewers responded negatively to her dramatic weight loss and her 2004 wedding to Al Reynolds, for which she accepted thousands of dollars of freebies from various companies. Sooo...she was fired?
CHANGING THE LOCKS: ABC telling Reynolds not to bother coming back to clean out her dressing room after Tuesday's announcement, the ex-View cohost told Ryan Seacrest Wednesday on KIIS-FM.
LETTING IT ALL HANG OUT: Pregnant Britney Spears photographed nude for the cover of the August issue of Harper's Bazaar. She's not a girl and very much a woman.
MAKING WAVES: Fox ordering only 16 episodes of The OC, as compared to the usual 22. It seems Mischa Barton may have killed off more than just her character.
STAGE FRIGHT: The stage production of The Lord of the Rings, which received mainly negative reviews from critics, closing in Toronto due to poor ticket sales. Who needs to go to the theater when you can just pop in a DVD?
CHART ATTACK: Nelly Furtado's Loose topping the charts, powered by the Timbaland-produced single, "Promiscuous." The Cars soundtrack rounding out the top 10.
SETTLED: Gene Simmons and onetime gal pal Georgeann Walsh Ward reaching an amicable settlement in Ward's defamation suit against Simmons, with regard to the documentary When KISS Ruled the World. No money changed hands in the settlement, which called for Ward to accept that Simmons had nothing to do with including her photo in the documentary.
ALSO SETTLED: The parents of a girl who was 15 at the time she had sex at a 2003 party at Nick Nolte's house settling their lawsuit against the actor and his son. The parents had alleged Nolte was liable for damages because his house had "a long history of furnishing drugs and/or alcohol to minors." (Man, wish we knew that back when we were in high school.)
REALITY MASTER: Epic Productions reteaming with Mark Burnett for Rock Star: Supernova, the second season of the hit CBS reality series.
NOT A MORNING PERSON: Charles Gibson celebrating his final morning as cohost of Good Morning America Wednesday, after being named anchor of World News Tonight last month. Unlike Katie Couric, he was not treated to a montage of his embarrassing hairstyles over the years.
GOT THE BLUES: Rush Limbaugh in a holding pattern while waiting to learn if he violated his deal with prosecutors in a prescription fraud case by being in possession of a bottle of Viagra seemingly prescribed to someone else. His attorney said the pills had Limbaugh's doctor's name on them for "privacy purposes," because the radio host apparently didn't want anyone to know he was being treated for erectile dysfunction. Good plan, guys.
BITE WORSE THAN HIS BARK: Axl Rose released from a Stockholm, Sweden jail after copping to biting a security guard and agreeing to pay a $5,500 fine, plus $1,360 in damages to the guard. Appetite for destruction, indeed.
TUMBLE 4 SANITATION: Boy George assigned to five days of court-ordered community service as an employee of New York's Sanitation Department. We're guessing he'll be working alongside people who may really want to hurt him.
CLAWS FOR APPLAUSE: Hugh Jackman set to reprise his mutant alter-ego, Wolverine, in an X-Men spinoff film due out next year, the studio announced. We knew there was nothing to that Last Stand business.
PRETTY IN PLAID: Kate Moss returning to work for Burberry, which had scrapped a campaign with the supermodel following allegations she had used cocaine. Moss, appearing in the center of Burberry's main autumn-winter 2006-2007 ad, wears a white trench coat that positively screams "clean and sober."
OFF THE BLOCK: Jennifer Lopez seeking an injunction against a tell-all book being penned by her first ex-husband Ojani Noa that promises to detail the couple's first sexual experience, according to court documents filed by Lopez's attorney. J to tha EW!
BYE FOR NOW: Sleater-Kinney announcing the band is going on "indefinite hiatus," and thanking fans for their "enthusiasm, passion and loyalty." The indie punk rockers are touring through the summer, so get your tickets while you can.
DOUBLE DOWN: Mary J. Blige, Jamie Foxx, Kanye West and Chris Brown all taking home double honors at the BET Awards Tuesday night.
FOUND: Lost star Emilie de Ravin tying the knot with Josh Janowicz on June 19, her rep confirms. We're guessing they'll honeymoon on the mainland.
