Latest Santino Wannabes Hit "Runway"
The latest crop of Project Runway contestants need only ask themselves one question: What would Santino do?
Bravo has unveiled its newest batch of fashion designer hopefuls, 15 contestants who will try to cut, sew and scheme their way away from Heidi Klum's auf weidersehen and be crowned winner of the reality competition's third season.
The German supermodel again returns to host the show, which for the first time will have a summer premiere, on July 12.
The search for the next great fashion designer kicks off just four months after the last go-round ended, with the production schedule likely expedited to capitalize on the raging success of Project Runway's second season.
This spring's finale, which saw the Texas-based Chloe Dao beat out love-to-hate-him Santino Rice and the fresh-out-of-fashion school Daniel Vosovic, drew in 3.4 million viewers, making the runway showdown the most watched telecast in the cable net's history.
As expected, Bravo will be doing its best to replicate the success by keeping all format changes to a bare minimum.
Klum will again be joined by a panel of insider judges, including designer Michael Kors and Elle magazine fashion director Nina Garcia, while the third chair will again be filled with a rotating weekly guest judge--last year, Olympic figure skater Sacha Cohen, Nicky Hilton and Will & Grace's Debra Messing were among the fashionistas to step into the critics chair.
Each week will again feature the fledgling designers testing their creative mettle with different challenges and again working with models, who themselves are competing for the chance to appear in the winning designer's clothes in a fashion spread. Mr. "Make it Work" himself, Parsons New School for Design Fashion Chair Tim Gunn, also returns to mentor the wannabes.
No word yet on whether he'll offer consultations at Red Lobster.
"Watching as each of these designers grow and develop during this challenging competition is absolutely amazing," Klum said. "There's some real talent here and it's clear that each of them has what it takes to be successful in the fashion business, but this is a unique opportunity for them to show what they can do.
"I'm so proud of Project Runway and I can't wait to see what our third season will bring."
One thing the third season will bring is a more mature--though likely no less dramatic--crop of contestants. Most of this season's hopefuls fall in their thirties with just four of the 15 competitors in their 20s and several more in their 40s.
Whatever their ages, this season's contestants will be vying for a pumped up prize package, including a spread in Elle, a 2007 Saturn Sky Roadster, a mentorship awarded by Macy's with I.N.C. International Concepts and $100,000 in seed money from TRESemme to help launch their own clothing line. The final three contestants will each show their designs at Olympus Fashion Week in Bryant Park this fall.
