Oprah Winfrey, Wedding Crasher
Oprah Winfrey may not be throwing Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn an $8 million wedding, but that's not stopping her from doing a little recon work. Or from following in the footsteps of the would-be groom.
The daytime doyenne took a page out of the Wedding Crashers rulebook over the weekend, surprising marriage-minded folk in the Tulsa area by unexpectedly popping into a pair of receptions to collect footage for a September episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show.
Winfrey, along with sidekick Gayle King, showed up at the Oklahoma--dubbed "Oprahoma" by local TV station KOTV for the momentous occasion--nuptials of Morgan and Bethany Francis and Ben and Heather Klein.
"I tried to compose myself, but there's no way you can do it when there's someone that famous in the room," the newly married Mrs. Francis told KOTV.
According to the local news station, Winfrey crashed the downtown soiree with camera crew in tow, congratulated couple number one and offered up a wedding gift that likely did little to dent her wallet: dishes from Dillards department store.
The shocked bride was then interviewed by Oprah show producers while the unexpected guest of honor chatted with wedding guests and signed the guest book.
"As she was walking away, I said, 'Oprah, I think you're so wonderful' and she looked at me and said, 'I think you are too.' She was real sweet," reveler Jeanette Johnson told KOTV.
Winfrey's posse then crossed the street to hit wedding number two.
Guests of the Klein party told the newscast they weren't sure at first that the crasher was Winfrey until she took off her face-covering straw hat, though one would assume the camera crew might also have been a tip-off.
"We were just in shock," the bride told KOTV. "I mean, we were truly in shock."
"And then all the screaming began," the groom said. "One thing led to another and here we are."
The duo said Winfrey stuck around for just 10 minutes, but made them memorable, posing for pictures with the wedding party and chatting up guests.
"I've never seen so many people in tuxes, and nice formal dresses horde in one place so fast in my entire life," Austin Zellner told the newscast.
Of course, the newlywed couples weren't the only Tulsa residents Winfrey shocked, though they were the only ones done so intentionally.
Before crashing the vow-swapping celebrations, the media high priestess and BFF King wandered around Tulsa's Promenade Mall so as not to appear at the parties empty-handed. KOTV again chronicled the outing.
According to the report, shoppers were kept 50 feet away from the perusing pair while Winfrey checked the bridal registries of the respective couples.
"My mom, I think, about had a heart attack," the Francis bride said. "She watches Oprah all the time. We were just completely shocked. No one really knew what to do. I mean, Oprah doesn't normally show up at someone's wedding, especially in Tulsa, Oklahoma."
According to KOTV, though, a Tulsa wedding isn't the only unexpected place Winfrey showed up over the weekend. The talk-show hostess is reportedly on a cross-country crashing tour that kicked off in California, and her foray into Oklahoma marked the 16th stop on her journey. She--or more likely, her producers--reportedly found the pair of weddings through online announcements.
On Sunday morning, Winfrey and King also surprised a Fort Smith congregation by showing up at the morning church service.
Footage from the unexpected stops is set to air on the talk show in September.
