Prince Caspian Delayed Until '08

It looks like The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian won't be setting sail on the big screen for a while.

Disney has delayed the release of its sequel to last year's box office hit, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, pushing it back from Christmas 2007 to summer 2008 to avoid stiff competition from another fantasy-themed flick, Columbia Pictures' The Water Horse, according to the trades.

Prince Caspian, a coproduction between the Mouse House and Walden Media, which owns the rights to the classic C.S. Lewis franchise, was originally scheduled to unspool on Dec. 14, 2007. But Disney opted for the new date after deciding that a game of chicken with Horse, hitting theaters Dec. 8, would have ultimately cut into both films' box-office grosses and could have upset its partner's bottom line, considering Walden is a coproducer on the latter.

"Sony and Walden wanted to announce Water Horse, and the best we can do is move into summer which will open up the holiday frame that Walden wanted," Dennis Rice, senior vice president of publicity at Disney, told the Hollywood Reporter.

The summer slot means director Andrew Adamson, who held the reins on Shrek and Narnia and is returning to pilot Caspian, will have more time to work on the movie's complicated effects, which will no doubt feature the usual plethora of talking creatures such as Aslan the Lion and a new addition, heroic mouse Reepicheep. They'll help the Pevensie siblings overthrow Narnia's evil King Miraz and restore Prince Caspian to the throne.

Holiday release The Water Horse, adapted from the book by Dick King Smith, is set during World War II and follows a lonely 12-year-old boy who discovers a mysterious egg in the Scottish highlands that unleashes a mythical sea creature. The film is being directed by Jay Russell (Tuck Everlasting, Ladder 49).

While moviegoers will have to wait an extra six months for Caspian, Narnia is casting a spell with audiences on home video.

Disney announced Tuesday that the The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe has nabbed the title of top-selling DVD for 2006 having sold more than 11 million copies since hitting store shelves on Apr. 11. The blockbuster is available as a single disc or a special two-disc Collector's Edition DVD that includes nearly 10 hours of bonus features.
