Tony Hearts Oprah, Not Julia

The Great White Way is turning purple.

The Color Purple, better known as the show that Oprah made, nabbed 11 Tony nominations Tuesday, including Best Musical, Original Score and Best Actress, making the Winfrey-endorsed show second only to The Drowsy Chaperone's leading 13 nods.

Not bad for a first-time producer.

The musical, based Alice Walker's novel, was a surprising standout nominee as, despite being a box office star, it was far from a critical darling. But at least in that regard, Winfrey has some A-list company.

Julia Roberts, the daytime hostess' BFF--second only to Gayle, of course, and maybe John Travolta--was on the receiving end of brutal critiques last month for her Broadway debut in the universally panned play Three Days of Rain. Unsurprisingly, Tony did not come calling, despite the fact that a nomination for the Oscar-winner would have all but guaranteed her press-boosting presence at the sometimes ignored awards show.

But Howard Sherman, executive director of the American Theater Wing, the group that founded the Tony Awards, said the public shouldn't take Roberts', or any actor's snub, as a dig at their talent.

"It's always a shame when good work can't be recognized," he told Reuters. "But that unfortunately is the nature of an awards process."

Previous Tony winners Phylicia Rashad, Natasha Richardson and Liev Schreiber announced the nominees at Lincoln Center Tuesday morning, a fitting trifecta given the Hollywood-heavy nominees.

The Wedding Singer, the 1980s-set show based on the Adam Sandler movie, nabbed a Best Musical nomination, while perennial song and dance man Harry Connick Jr. earned a Best Actor nomination for his turn in the nine-time nominated revival The Pajama Game.

Another revival, Clifford Obets' Awake and Sing!, racked up eight nominations, including Best Revival of a Play and nods for each of its three actors, including Mark Ruffalo.

As for Best Actress in a Play, Cynthia Nixon's performance in Rabbit Hole goes up against theater favorite Kate Burton and veteran thesp Lynn Redgrave from the period piece The Constant Wife.

The Best Actor in a Play category also got its share of Tinseltown heavyweights, with Shining City's Oliver Platt and Faith Healer's Ralph Fiennes pitted against each other.

Of course, a marquee name wasn't a requisite for nominations. The Drowsy Chaperone racked up the most of any nominee and is widely expected to be the big winner at this year's awards. The show was a sleeper hit, a 1920s-set musical centering on a die-hard musical theater fan whose favorite show comes to life.

Jersey Boys, the behind-the-scenes story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, was a breakout audience favorite and racked up eight nominations of its own.

As for non-musical theater, Awake and Sing!, the revival following a Bronx family during the Depression, nabbed the most nominations with eight.

The ceremony takes place at Radio City Music Hall on June 11 and airs on CBS.
