FIRST LOOK: The News in Brief, April 24, 2006
DO NOT DISTURB: Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt formally requesting privacy from the press "so that we can enjoy this beautiful country with our children." Namibian authorities backed the couple up, forcing three French photographers and a photographer from South Africa's Sunday Times to leave the country or face arrest. The unfortunate photographers therefore missed the chance to capture the family's stirring visit to a local KFC and to a pet store, where they purchased a turtle, per the Sunday Times.
NO OFFENSE, BUT... Despite the woeful title of his post-Jessica Simpson breakup album, What's Left of Me, and the several songs on it that refer to the split, Nick Lachey swearing to MTV that he is not looking to hurt his estranged wife and that he still loves her. The former boy bander also recently told Rolling Stone that he doesn't know if "there were other men" and that he was "blindsided" by Simpson's request for a divorce. (Apparently, he doesn't read the tabloids.)
MISSION NOT SO IMPOSSIBLE: Tom Cruise switching gears and electing to attend the London and Paris premieres of Mission: Impossible III on Tuesday and Wednesday, instead of just the Rome premiere as previously planned. "So I'm here," the actor told reporters Monday in Rome. "And I'll be here for a few hours and then I'll get back on an airplane and go back home to Kate and Suri." Better make that a few days, number one dad.
BIG UPS FOR VIRGINITY: The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Wedding Crashers dominating the nominations for the 2006 MTV Movie Awards with five apiece, including dueling Best Picture nods. With comedy like that on the agenda, this is one awards show we might actually stay awake for...oh, who are we kidding? The awards will be handed out June 3, with the ceremony airing June 8 on MTV.
TONE DEAF: Just one more reason to pity Sean Preston Spears Federline: According to his father, Kevin Federline, the seven-month-old tot has abysmal taste in music. K-Fed tells Extra that Sean Preston loves his album, Playing with Fire, and is "all smiles whenever he hears it." Poor, poor little guy.
EX FILES: Gillian Anderson splitting from her husband of 16 months, Julian Ozanne, the couple's lawyers said in a statement. The twosome gave no reason for the breakup, but we're sure the truth is out there.
METHOD ACTING: Leonardo DiCaprio injured his leg Friday on the set of The Blood Diamond, currently filming in Mozambique. The actor jetted to neighboring South Africa for medical treatment and was back on the set on Saturday, according to the film's publicist. While the dramatic incident ordinarily would have drawn far more media attention, the paparazzi were otherwise occupied with around the clock coverage of Brangelina Baby Watch 2006.
PLAYING DEFENSE: Charlie Sheen calling allegations made by his estranged wife Denise Richards in court papers filed Friday "baseless." Among other things, Richards claimed Sheen threatened to kill her and was a frequent visitor to porn sites that featured both young girls and boys. "I move forward and maintain my integrity and I keep my chin up and I focus on my children," Sheen told Entertainment Tonight. And by children, he means his daughters with Richards.
NOT MY PROBLEM: Dan Brown expressing his belief that it is not his responsibility to address controversies stirred up by his bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code. "Let the biblical scholars and historians battle it out," he told an audience at a sold-out writers talk Sunday. Unspoken, but understood: As long as those royalty checks keep on coming, I could care less what people say about my book.
SUNNY DAYS: Sesame Street racking up a leading seven Daytime Emmys Saturday night, including Best Performer in a Children's Series for Kevin Clash, who plays Elmo, and was, we assume, tickled by his win. Ellen DeGeneres boogied to the tune of four Emmys for her daytime talk fest, and Rachael Ray stirred up a win for Best Service Show for 30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray. Meanwhile, Live 8 on AOL winning the inaugural iPod Emmy, much to the confusion of some of the senior members of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences.
MODEL BEHAVIOR: Former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model May Anderson arrested Thursday after she allegedly struck a flight attendant on a flight from Amsterdam to Miami. Upon touching down at the airport, Anderson was tested for drugs and alcohol and taken to jail; no word whether she was screened for the same strain of violent modelitis that has infected Naomi Campbell.
WORTH WAITING FOR: Barbershop star Sean Patrick Thomas tying the knot with actress Aonika Laurent in New Orleans on Saturday. The couple had postponed their nuptials due to Hurricane Katrina.
COMEBACK KIDS: Opie and Anthony officially replacing David Lee Roth on CBS Radio beginning Wednesday. Don't let the door hit ya, Diamond Dave!
WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS? Entourage star Kevin Dillon, 40, wed his pregnant fianc?e, Jane Stuart, 27, Saturday night in a Las Vegas wedding chapel, US Weekly reports. Dillon's costar, Kevin Connolly and a singing Elvis impersonator looked on as the twosome tied the knot.
SILENT HILL MAKES NOISE: Silent Hill topping the box office in its opening weekend, grossing an estimated $20.2 million. Scary Movie 4, finishing second with $17 million.
