Eddie Murphy and Wife Officially Kaput

Over the past 48 hours, Eddie Murphy's marriage officially timed out.

The Nutty Professor star's divorce from wife Nicole Murphy was made final Monday in Los Angeles, according to court papers.

As part of the arrangement, the actor will pay his ex child support to help take care of their five children--Bria, Myles, Shane, Zola and Bella Zahra. Murphy also has a son, Christian, from a previous relationship.

"The welfare of our children is our main concern and their best interest is our first priority," Murphy said last year in a statement issued by his rep, Paul Bloch.

Nicole, a former model, filed for divorce Aug. 5 after 12 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split. Their union had seemingly thrived (or at least survived) after some embarrassing legal problems for Mr. Murphy resulting from the notorious give-a-transsexual-prostitute-a-lift episode in 1997.

The Saturday Night Live alum has had his share of box-office bombs, but for every I Spy ($33.5 million) on his résumé there also seems to be a Shrek 2 (which grossed more than $441 million domestically). While Murphy made a name for himself with his Raw brand of stand-up comedy, a switch to more family-friendly fare in recent years has apparently served him well, with even not-so-great films like Daddy Day Care earning upward of $100 million.

Next up for the veteran funnyman is the big-screen adaptation of Broadway's Dreamgirls, costarring Beyoncé Knowles and Jamie Foxx and set for a Dec. 21 release. Murphy will also pull double duty as a meek bachelor and the monstrous woman he's forced to marry in the comedy Norbit. Cuba Gooding Jr., Thandie Newton and Eddie Griffin have signed up for the project as well, and a release date is TBA.
