"Brokeback" Lassoes GLAAD Prize

Sure, Brokeback Mountain lost out on the Best Picture Oscar, but at least the gay cowboy flick is riding into the sunset with a consolation prize.

Ang Lee's western took home the top honor at the 17th Annual GLAAD Media Awards Monday, beating out Capote, The Family Stone, Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang and Rent to be named Outstanding Motion Picture in Wide Release. And helping to ensure there would be no repeat of Brokeback's Oscar upset, its awards nemesis, Crash, was not on the ballot.

Which was not lost on Lee.

"Finally, an award that actually means something to me," the director said. "Some of these are very meaningful to me. Okay, there was one that got away, but that's okay."

Lee received a standing ovation upon accepting the trophy, which he said would be "the very last award I will accept for Brokeback Mountain...And to end the journey here tonight is like coming home."

"The fact is," he continued, "Brokeback Mountain has helped to change the world."

But Lee wasn't the only big name who walked away with some hardware.

Super Size Me's Morgan Spurlock won for Outstanding Reality Program for his a gay-themed installment of documentary series, 30 Days.

Oprah Winfrey also managed to get in on the award action, nabbing a trophy for Outstanding Talk Show Episode thanks to a coming-out-themed show titled "When I Knew I Was Gay."

The watchdog group also gave kudos to Melissa Etheridge, naming her the year's Outstanding Music Artist on the strength of her Greatest Hits: The Road Less Traveled, and singer-songwriter Conor Oberst, aka Bright Eyes, whose video for "First Day of My Life" received a special recognition award.

The kudosfest, put forth by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, honors mainstream media for the "fair, accurate and inclusive representations" of the gay community, and was started in 1985 as a response to the press' then-sensationalized AIDS coverage.

This year's show took place at New York's Marriott Marquis Hotel and will be televised once again on MTV's LGBT-friendly channel, Logo, on Apr. 15, as well as air for the first time on VH1 the following day.
