"Arrested Development" Star a Daddy
Here's hoping Tony Hale's offspring bears no resemblance to his TV alter ego.
The Arrested Development star and his wife, Martel, are celebrating the arrival of a baby girl. Loy Ann Hale was born Feb. 24 at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, weighing in at 6 pounds, 4 ounces.
Newborn and parents are said to be doing fine. Loy is the first child for Hale and his wife, a Daytime Emmy-winning makeup artist whose credits include All My Children, Saturday Night Live and the film The Royal Tenenbaums. The couple married in May 2003.
Hale, 35, is best known as Arrested Development's Byron "Buster" Bluth, a handless, mother-loving Army boy. With the fate of the Fox series up in the air, it's a role he may or may not reprise next year.
While the network chose to bill the show's two-hour finale last month as the season and not series ender, Fox has no plans to renew the comedy for a fourth season. But the show may find new life elsewhere.
Both ABC and Showtime expressed interest in picking up shortened seasons of the Emmy-winning sitcom, with recent reports indicating the cable network has the edge.
Citing sources familiar with the negotiations, E! Online TV columnist Kristin Veitch reports that show creator and exec producer Mitch Hurwitz is contemplating a deal put forth by Showtime offering to buy two 13-episode seasons with the option available for a third.
While Showtime would probably need to cut costs on the show, producers wouldn't have to sweat out the nightmarish Nielsens that plagued the show throughout its Fox run. If even half of Arrested Development's 6.2 million average viewers tuned in to the cable version, it would be Showtime's biggest hit to date.
Still, Fox has yet to officially cancel the show, and Hurwitz has until June 15 to decide whether or not he wants to bring the cast to a different network.
Regardless, Hale will be keeping plenty busy.
He'll appear on the big screen later this month in Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector and in next month's road-trip comedy RV opposite Robin Williams, Cheryl Hines and fellow Bluth brother Will Arnett.
Hale is also set to costar in Stranger Than Fiction, about an IRS agent who hears voices in his head, alongside comedy heavyweight Will Ferrell. The comedy is due in November.
And, to make sure his new baby has plenty of Pampers, Hale has two more movies in the works for this year: the romantic comedy/mockumentary My Suicide, and the post-apocalyptic political comedy The Beach Party at the Threshold of Hell. We bet little Loy can't wait to see that one.
