Joaquin Walks Away from Car Wreck

Joaquin Phoenix walked the line between life and death Thursday, when he narrowly escaped injury in a serious car accident.

The Golden Globe winner was driving his car on a winding canyon road above Los Angeles's Sunset Strip, when he realized his brakes were not working, a police spokesman said.

Phoenix lost control of the car, which overturned and collided with another vehicle.

His publicist, Susan Patricola, said the actor was wearing his seat belt and was able to walk away from the scene after a passerby helped him out of the car.

"His brakes went out, and the car flipped over," Patricola stated Thursday. "But he's doing fine. He may be very sore in the morning, but right now he is doing okay."

Phoenix and the driver of the other car, who also escaped injury, exchanged insurance information on the scene. The cause of the accident, first reported by Us Weekly, was still under investigation.

Despite the mishap, Phoenix is expected to be in attendance at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday, where he is a nominee in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of Johnny Cash in the biopic Walk the Line.

"Joaquin will be at the awards on Sunday," Patricola said. "He'll be okay."

Phoenix and his onscreen wife, Reese Witherspoon, will be looking to repeat the double success they had at the Golden Globes earlier this month, where both picked up acting trophies in the Comedy or Musical category.

The two are also expected to be on the list of Oscar contenders when nominations for the Academy Awards are announced on Tuesday. The Oscars will be awarded Mar. 5.
