No Image Problem for "Chris," "Crash"
The NAACP has nothing but love for Everybody Hates Chris.
The hit rookie UPN series chronicling the semi-fictionalized childhood of Chris Rock was at the top of the heap at Tuesday's NAACP Image Award nominations.
The show is up for five trophies: Outstanding Comedy Series, Actor in a Comedy Series for star Tyler James Williams, Actress in a Comedy Series for Tichina Arnold; Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Terry Crews and Director of a Comedy Series for Ken Whittingham.
Everybody Hates Chris tied Fox's The Bernie Mac Show and UPN's Half & Half for most nominations in the comedy series categories. The latter sitcoms are also up in the Outstanding Comedy Series race, joined by the Cartoon Network's The Boondocks and UPN's Girlfriends.
Grey's Anatomy scored four nominations to lead the TV drama contenders, including one for Outstanding Drama Series, where the ABC hospital hit will face off against Commander in Chief (ABC), CSI: Miami (CBS), House (Fox) and Lost (ABC).
Overall, ABC leads the networks with 23 nominations, followed by UPN with 15 and HBO with 12 nominations. The cable network's acclaimed Lackawanna Blues scored seven nominations, the most of any television program.
The NAACP Image Awards celebrates the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color in literature, television, motion pictures and recording arts.
The Oscar-buzzing race-relations ensemble flick Crash tops the movie category with six nominations, including Outstanding Motion Picture, Supporting Actress for Thandie Newton and Supporting Actor for Don Cheadle, Larenz Tate and Terrence Howard, who is also up for Outstanding Actor for the rap drama Hustle & Flow.
Other nominees for Outstanding Motion Picture include Coach Carter, Diary of a Mad Black Woman, Hitch and Hustle & Flow.
Meanwhile, the recording slate predictably is led by comeback queen Mariah Carey and critical faves Kanye West and Alicia Keys, each of whom racked up four nods.
West is up for Outstanding Male Artists, facing off, incidentally against his "Gold Digger" partner Jamie Foxx, among others. Carey and Keys are up against each other in several categories, including Outstanding Female Artist, Outstanding Music Video, Outstanding Song and Outstanding Album.
This year marks the first time directors will get in on the Image Award action. The organization will offer inaugural honors for directors in the drama and comedy categories, as well as for a feature film or TV movie.
A special committee of 300 industry professionals and NAACP leaders from across the country selected five nominees in each of 38 categories from a whopping 1,200 entries. Winners are voted on by the full membership of the NAACP. The full list of nominees can be found online at naacpimageawards.net.
Finally, Carlos Santana will be inducted into the NAACP Image Awards Hall of Fame in recognition of his musical and social impact on the national and international scene.
"Carlos Santana is a visionary artist whose work has inspired and motivated people of all races and cultures," Bruce Gordon, president and CEO of the NAACP, said in a statement. "He has created music that has become the soundtrack for the world and I have always had great respect for his musical genius as well as his spirit. We are honored that he is joining us to celebrate his remarkable life and accomplishments."
The NAACP Image Awards will be presented at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Feb. 25 and taped for broadcast on Mar. 3 on Fox.
