Martha's Sole Apprentice
In the words of the incomparable Barry White, Martha Stewart has found her first, her last, her everything.
Yes, it's a woman. And no, it has nothing to do with her stint in Camp Cupcake.
In case you weren't keeping score at home (and with an average audience of just 6.5 million this season, chances are you weren't), the domestic diva named magazine publisher Dawna Stone her one and only Apprentice on Wednesday night's hour-long finale.
The 37-year-old St. Petersburg, Florida, native won The Apprentice: Martha Stewart and a primo job on the season ender, which, thanks to its consistently low Nielsens, was also the series ender.
Stone beat out 34-year-old New York chef Bethenny Frankel in the finale to land the job of director of development at Stewart's new healthy-living magazine, Body + Soul, along with a $250,000 salary and a Buick Lucerne.
"Bethenny, you're spunky, you're a show-off, you feel that you have to make a physical impression which is really not terribly necessary at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia," Stewart said before making her choice. "Dawna, you are clearly a talented manager and we can always use someone with your business acumen at Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and I would like to offer you the job of my Apprentice."
The final task for the duo was in the same vein as that performed by Donald's troupe last week, revolving around the contestants organizing separate charity events.
Stone was dealt the task of putting together a fashion show for Liz Claiborne, which, despite her ultimate victory, did not start off well. She delegated too many tasks to former contestant Amanda, who mispronounced the designer's name, ticked off most of the company's executives, and nearly caused a delay to the show. But in the end, Stone impressed Stewart by exchanging weepy, congratulatory hugs with her fellow workers.
Frankel on the other hand, pulled off her event, the Big Apple Circus party, without a hitch, transforming a gritty New York nightclub into a big-top extravaganza. However, in stark contrast to Stone's business relationships, Frankel shared only cursory handshakes with her team at the end of their task.
In the final boardroom, held on the set of Stewart's recently renewed daytime chatfest, Martha, the contestants made their final pleas, and belittlements, for the gig.
Stone complained that Frankel "rubs people the wrong way," while Frankel retorted Stone lacks "that special something." Stewart's daughter Alexis, meanwhile, was just busy squeezing in plugs for her daily radio show.
Can't blame the girl for trying.
While the finale marked the end of the line for Stewart's reality hopes, Trump's version is still going strong. By NBC standards, anyway.
The network has reupped the show for a fifth and sixth installments, with the latter set in Southern California.
The fifth season of The Apprentice hits airwaves this spring.
