Suicide Shuts Down "Daily Show"

Jon Stewart and the rest of The Daily Show crew are back to work after an unexpected, and tragic, turn of events shut down the fake newscast for a day.

Monday's taping was scrapped after a show employee committed suicide over the weekend, Comedy Central said Tuesday.

"Bill Clarey, a young staff member of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, passed away over the weekend. He was a wonderful and dedicated employee and all of us at Comedy Central and The Daily Show are devastated by his loss," the network said in a statement.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends."

A former Daily Show intern, Clarey, 24, currently served as the show's receptionist. Employees learned of his death as they arrived for work early Monday. Comedy Central called off the evening telecast and provided grief counselors to the shaken staff.

While a rerun aired Monday, Stewart and cohorts were working on a new episode for Tuesday night, featuring guest Howard Stern. The Daily Show will tape new episodes for the rest of the week before going on a planned vacation for the final two weeks of the year.
