Alec & Kim's L.A. Confidential
Kim Basinger made a cameo appearance in the latest installment of the long-running courtroom drama otherwise known as the custody battle with ex-husband Alec Baldwin.
The Oscar-winning actress turned up Tuesday for a closed-door session in a Los Angeles family court--the most recent hearing over how to split the parenting duties for their 10-year-old daughter, Ireland.
Because a minor is involved, the hearing was again closed to press and the public and all documents were sealed. There was no word whether the 52-year-old Basinger spoke during the nearly two-hour session.
According to attorneys for both parties, Superior Court Commissioner Maren Nelson appears closer to resolving some of the outstanding matters, including the 47-year-old Baldwin's complaint that Basinger is trying to turn their daughter against him.
"I am able to say that Kim is respectful of what the judge did, and she's pleased with today, and she hopes that the situation between she and Alec will continue in a positive direction," Basinger's lawyer, Neal Hersh, told reporters outside the courtroom.
Baldwin's counsel, Vicki Greene, was quick to note the judge didn't specifically address the matter of joint custody or his visitation rights, just unspecified issues having to do with Ireland's care.
"The judge sealed the decision, so there's really nothing to say," she said, refusing to comment on whether she was happy with the ruling. However, she did say she was "very pleased with the judge's thoroughness."
Based on previous court filings, Baldwin is less than thrilled with Basinger for allegedly limiting his access to Ireland, including curtailing email and telephone time.
The actor, who lives in New York and hosted Saturday Night Live last weekend, didn't fly to California, where Basinger lives with Ireland, for Tuesday's hearing.
At an Oct. 31 hearing, Baldwin, through his lawyers, requested a new therapist for Ireland. He also questioned Basinger's competence as a mother, asking the court to order her to undergo a psychological examination and take parenting 101 because of her "pathological need" to alienate Ireland from him.
That request drew a stinging rebuke from Hersh, who claimed that Baldwin had "severe emotional problems" and noted that the Oscar-nominated actor had been dogged by allegations of domestic abuse in the past.
Despite the barbs, Hersh did say communication between the exes has gotten better.
Green, meanwhile, said Baldwin was only exercising his "right to parent his daughter."
"When he comes to court, it's because he feels it's an important issue that needs attention," she said, then added that no other future hearings are scheduled.
Inseparable on the big screen in flicks like The Marrying Man and The Getaway remake, Baldwin and Basinger made their union official in 1993. But it didn't take. After seven years of marriage, the couple separated in 2000 and Basinger filed for divorce the following year, after which the two began squabbling over custody.
They appeared to reach a truce in March 2004, only to see the agreement crumble seven months later as Baldwin objected to the terms.
