Taking things one day at time apparently didn't work out for Valerie Bertinelli. The former sitcom star has finally filed for divorce from Eddie Van Halen, citing irreconcilable differences.

The former One Day at a Time actress filed the divorce petition in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday, even though the couple officially separated on Oct. 15, 2001.

Bertinelli's spokeswoman Heidi Schaeffer described the split as amicable.

The couple have one child together, 14-year-old Wolfgang Van Halen. Though there's no word on custody arrangements, the boy has been living with his mother for the past four years.

According to court papers, the couple has already divvied up their assets.

News of the couple's rough patch first made headlines in July 2002, nearly 10 months after the actress, 45, and the guitarist, 50, formally separated. At the time, Bertinelli was working on the Salt Lake City set of Touched by an Angel, while Van Halen remained in Los Angeles with Wolfgang.

The ultimate bad boy-good girl pairing came after Bertinelli's brother took her to a Van Halen concert in 1980 and she met the rocker backstage. After a whirlwind romance, and at the height of their respective popularity, the couple tied the knot on Apr. 11, 1981.

The relationship was rocky from the start. Bertinelli suffered a miscarriage in 1986; shortly after, Van Halen entered into a stint in rehab. At the time, Bertinelli gave an interview to Redbook magazine saying that their marriage needed work.

"He doesn't abuse me; he hurts himself. He's got a problem I'm not happy with, but I bring stability to his life," Bertinelli told the mag. "And besides, I love him. It's my weakness. Some people are addicted to food. I'm addicted to my husband."

The virtuoso guitarist underwent hip-replacement surgery in 1999, after damaging the joint from years of jumping around onstage. Months later, he was diagnosed with tongue cancer, but after two years of treatment, he was declared "100 percent cancer-free."

Bertinelli and Van Halen have also seen their careers slide.

Bertinelli had starred in a slew of made-for-TV movies since the end of One Day at a Time in 1984, but hasn't done one since 2003's Finding John Christmas. Her last credit, according to IMDb.com, is the One Day at a Time reunion special, which aired on CBS last February.

Van Halen and his mates are once again searching for a new lead singer; the band hasn't released an album since the 2004 greatest-hits collection Best of Both Worlds.
