Mandy Ridicules Rehab Rumor
Apparently, Mandy Moore doesn't like it when the Internet talks about her behind her back.
The 21-year-old starlet was the subject of a recent rumor claiming that she had checked herself into a Connecticut rehab facility to deal with a "personal problem."
The ruse, which spread across the World Wide Web courtesy of various celeb-obsessed sites, came complete with a statement purportedly from Moore's Los Angeles-based publicist.
"Mandy Moore recently checked herself into Silver Hill Hospital for a planned 10-day stay to deal with a specific and personal problem that had recently developed," the statement read. "Moore scheduled her stay in Silver Hill several days ago and expects to leave on Tuesday (Oct. 4), as planned."
Had the singer-actress actually felt the need to seek help from a rehab facility--as many stars do at one point or another--that would be one thing.
However, according to Moore herself, she was nowhere near the treatment center in question at the time the rumor broke.
The Saved! star took to her official Website, MandyMoore.com, to mount her defense.
"Earlier this week, I was apprised of a wonderful piece of gossip that I was in rehab... nice!" Moore wrote. "As I sit here at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf in Los Angeles drinking my English Breakfast Latte (quite a distance from a supposed Connecticut rehab center I have apparently checked myself into), I am so saddened that people stretch as far as they do in attempting to spread gossip that, at the end of the day, is just downright hurtful.
"Regardless, I'm not going to respond anymore publicly than here on my own website as it would probably make the originators of this ridiculousness happy and fuel their little fire," the actress added.
After leaving the message up on her site for a brief period of time, Moore removed it, feeling that she had made her point, her rep told E!
The actress wasn't the first celebrity to use her Website to reach her fans directly.
In July, Pamela Anderson took to her Website to announce that she was not getting remarried to ex-husband Tommy Lee, despite rumors to the contrary.
"This is a huge misunderstanding," Anderson wrote on her online diary. "I am NOT getting married. Period. I am not engaged to Tommy Lee."
Earlier this week, country star Chris Cagle used his Website to unleash an unfortunate truth upon the Internet--that the baby born to his girlfriend was not his.
"As many of you are aware, I had been anxiously awaiting the addition of a new baby to my life," the crooner wrote. "The baby has been born, and both mother and child are in good health.
"Since the birth, however, we have discovered that biologically the child is not mine."
The singer continued: "As excited as I was about becoming a new father, my disappointment now is equally strong. Out of respect for all that are involved, please allow this situation to remain private and know that I will not be commenting further on this very personal matter."
Talk about throwing fuel on the fire.
