U2 Hijacks Conan
Tonight will be Late Night with Bono O'Brien.
NBC's reigning red-headed night owl Conan O'Brien is turning over his entire show Thursday to U2. Late Night with Conan O'Brien: The U2 Edition will feature the band playing three songs and then sit down for an interview with the host in a first for the NBC late-night talk show, which usually only features musical acts at the end of the program.
"We were able to offer them something to feel enough like an event for them to do the show," Late Night booker Jim Pitt told the Associated Press.
Late Night airs at 12:35 a.m. ET/PT.
The Irish rockers have broken all the rules over the past 15 months when it comes to promoting their latest release, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. In addition to a precedent-setting deal with Apple prior to the release of the disc, which included their own special-edition iPod, Bono and the boys embarked upon several innovative television tie-ins to promote Bomb.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees appeared on HBO's Entourage this season and debuted several songs from the triple-platinum-selling disc during an episode of CSI late last season.
The Late Night gig coincides with U2's sold-out seven-night stand at Madison Square Garden.
The concerts are part of U2's 2005 world tour, which will play to more than 3.3 million people, per a press release touting the special Late Night appearance.
While the hourlong show is certainly big news for U2, even bigger news regarding the band's frontman may come Friday.
Oddsmakers are betting that the 44-year-old could win the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in trying to ease Third World poverty.
Meanwhile, another fixture of late-night television, Comedy Central's Jon Stewart, is also ready to shake up his Daily Show format.
After recently moving into a larger studio, The Daily Show has booked the White Stripes as the fake news program's first ever musical act. The Detroit duo will perform on the show Dec. 1, Comedy Central announced Wednesday.
