First Lady Helps "Makeover" Crew
Laura Bush went extreme Tuesday.
The first lady made her way to the real-world set of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition to help victims of Hurricane Katrina rebuild in Mississippi.
Bush, who sought out the show herself, pitched in to assist ABC's Emmy-winning series in the hurricane-devastated Biloxi.
According to network spokeswoman Annie Fort, Makeover star Ty Pennington and several other members of the cast and crew were not on hand for the Biloxi shoot. Because the Bush-attended event was put together so quickly in the aftermath of the storm, it coincided with a previously scheduled episode already in production elsewhere.
Fort says Bush helped another Makeover regular, Preston Sharp, distribute items like mattresses and clothing. The first lady also made stops with Makeover members at four disaster relief shelters in the area, where she doled out supplies and hugs.
The show, which features a team of designers that rebuilds an entire house at a frenzied pace for a deserving family, won an Emmy earlier this month for Best Reality Series. Makeover kicked off its third season with back-to-back episodes, snagging over 16 million for its season premiere, according to Nielsen Media Research, and ranking as the 10th most watched show last week.
Although there is no official word on when the special episode featuring Bush will air, the Los Angeles Times reports that the hurricane edition will bow sometime during November sweeps.
