Mary-Kate Takes Independent Route
It's going to be a little tougher for Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen to meet for coffee between classes this fall.
While Ashley will reportedly be returning to Manhattan for her sophomore year at New York University, her darker-haired sister will be pursuing independent study opportunities elsewhere, reportedly at a California art school, according to Us Weekly magazine.
However, the teen queens' rep, Michael Pagnotta denied reports that Mary-Kate was transferring from NYU's Gallatin School, where the 19-year-old twins completed their freshman year in May.
"Mary-Kate is not transferring from NYU," Pagnotta said in a statement to E! News. "She will be doing approved independent study for credit through the Gallatin School in the fall. She will continue to be enrolled there."
It's not the first time Mary-Kate has been rumored to be leaving her Big Apple studies behind.
Last October, Pagnotta shot down rumors that his petite client had dropped out in the midst of her first semester, claiming that she was merely in Los Angeles on a business matter.
In March, the rep again addressed rumors that Mary-Kate was not planning to matriculate for a second year.
"It's absolutely not true," Pagnotta told People magazine. "She will continue to be enrolled in NYU in the fall. They both will continue to be enrolled in the fall."
Luckily for Ashley, Mary-Kate's change of plans won't affect her living situation. The duo moved into separate apartments in January and placed the $7.3 million condo they purchased together but never inhabited on the market in March.
Pagnotta denied that the twin moguls' choice not to cohabitate was motivated by friction between the siblings.
"They are as close as ever. There's no problem between them. They share a lot of interests but they also do a lot of things separately," he said in January.
According to Us Weekly, Mary-Kate's decision to study on the West Coast may have been partly motivated by someone else she's grown close to recently.
The diminutive actress has reportedly been dating Greek shipping heir and L.A. film student Stavros Niarchos of late.
"Her boyfriend has something to do with it," Us Weekly quoted one source as saying. "She's totally in love with him."
However, Mary-Kate's decision to delve deeper into art studies is likely academically motivated as well, seeing as the teen has displayed a bona fide interest in the arts at NYU and spent last spring interning for Annie Leibovitz.
Though they may be studying on opposite coasts, the twin titans continue to share joint responsibility for their billion-dollar media empire, Dualstar LLC.
In January, the New York Minute stars appointed a new CEO to head up their company and vowed to take a more active role in pushing Dualstar to "even higher heights."
Nobody ever said they were your average college sophomores.
