Nicole Catching Up with Paris

Anything Paris can do, Nicole can do. And vice versa.

Paris Hilton has already written a book and appeared in a major motion picture (we're counting House of Wax, not One Night in Paris). She has also been recording her debut album, along with planning her wedding and preparing for another season of The Simple Life.

Former partner-in-partying Nicole Richie will soon publish her first book and is preparing her first CD, all while planning her wedding and doing another season of The Simple Life.

If that weren't enough, the former best friends, locked in a bitter feud since the beginning of the year, are now engaging in a high-stakes game of chicken over rival movie projects.

Richie's screen foray, Kids in America, a reality-based comedy-drama, had been scheduled to open Nov. 4. That happens to be the same date that Hilton's next movie, National Lampoon's Pledge This!, hits cineplexes.

Kids in America producer Andrew Shaifer told the New York Post Tuesday that he had staked out the date for his film four months ago. "It is obvious something is going on," he said regarding the just announced Pledge This! opening. "My feeling is this was done on purpose."

The speculation is stoked by Richie and Hilton's well publicized falling out.

It was widely assumed Richie would not return for the new season of The Simple Life, with Hilton all but announcing her preference for a new sidekick, specifically Rod Stewart's daughter Kimberly Stewart.

But Fox suits, who have the celebutantes under contract, apparently thought the tension between the two might make for good television. The network picked up the options for both Hilton and Richie and announced last week that a fourth season of The Simple Life was on track--although there's been no word on how the show will play out, especially since the two aren't on speaking terms. No word on when the new season will debut.

Richie has been trying to move out of Hilton's shadow for a while.

She recently inked a book deal with Regan Books and her The Truth About Diamonds, about life as a pop-culture princess, is slated for release Sept. 1 in the U.S. Unlike Hilton's "book," Richie's tome is a semi-autobiographical work of fiction about a girl named Chloe Parker who grew up in the shadow of a famous rocker father.

Hilton's picture-heavy offering, Confessions of an Heiress, was released earlier this year.

Despite Hilton's long-hyped, long-in-the-works Heiress/Warner Brothers debut disc, Richie may actually beat her former pal to the record store.

Hilton's still unfinished opus is not coming out in 2005, according to sources, and may not see the light of day until mid-2006.

That gives Richie ample time to put the wraps on her record, which, she told MTV in March, will hit stores sometime this year.
