KC Goes Down Saturday Night
KC really got down Saturday night--much to the surprise of the Sunshine Band and some 5,000 fans who watched the disco survivor take an embarrassing spill on stage over the weekend.
The "Shake Your Booty" singer tumbled while performing at the Cinco de Mayo Festival in Phoenix, according to a statement Monday from publicist Shannon Herber. His apparently overzealous booty shaking landed the Grammy winner a brief hospital stay, where he was treated for a sprained knee and received stitches to close up a gash over his right eye.
Herber says that KC and the Sunshine Band were just beginning the third song of their set, the sure-fire crowd-pleaser "Boogie Shoes," when Casey "got low" and took an unplanned trip head-first into the concrete floor, six feet below.
The 54-year-old frontman, whose full name is Harry Wayne Casey, blames the fall on his footwear.
"I left my shoes at the hotel and had to perform in a new pair," says Casey. "I picked the wrong pair of Boogie Shoes!"
Ever the trouper, Casey resumed the show after a quick backstage patch up. He went to the emergency room after the gig.
He is currently recovering at his Miami home, his publicist says. But Casey is due break out the Boogie Shoes this week for a stop in Winter Haven, Florida, on Friday and Atlanta on Saturday. Barring any further unplanned stage dives, the disco ball will keep spinning as KC and the Sunshine Band's never-ending tour of theme parks, summer fairs and casinos stretches into the fall.
Apparently that's the way they like it.
