Nick Phones In Plea
Nick Carter wants it the not-guilty way.
The Backstreet Boy pleaded innocent to two drunken driving-related charges Wednesday in an Orange County, California.
The plea was actually phoned in by Carter's lawyer, according to Mark Macaulay, spokesman for the Orange County District Attorney's Office. Because the two counts were misdemeanors--one for driving under the influence and the other for driving with a blood-alcohol level over 0.08--Carter was not required to show for the arraignment.
The charges--which carry a maximum penalty of a $1,500 fine, probation and loss of license--stem from a Mar. 5 arrest in Huntington Beach. The 25-year-old popster was pulled over for erratic driving. He subsequently failed a field sobriety test.
Last month, Carter's rep issued a statement claiming the singer wasn't to blame for the traffic snafu.
"Nick Carter deeply regrets the current situation. He is on doctor-prescribed medication and was unaware of its interaction possibilities," Carter publicist Juliette Harris said. She did not elaborate on which pills the Backstreeter was supposedly popping at the time of his arrest.
The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 2. Carter is not expected to show.
In the meantime, Paris' former boy-toy will have plenty to keep him busy.
Carter, who released a disappointing solo album in 2002, has reteamed with the Backstreeters. On Wednesday, as Carter was phoning in his plea, Jive Records announced that Never Gone, the first BSB album since 2000's Black &Blue, would drop June 14.
The first single from the new studio set, "Incomplete," is already a Top 20 hit in Canada and Germany, Jive boasted in the release.
Beginning in June, Carter and the boys will be hitting the promo circuit hard in support of Never Gone, including a performance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno June 16. A full-scale tour will launch in mid-July.
In the meantime, Carter fans can get their fix Friday at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues, when Backstreet plays one of its spring teaser dates.
