A Third Son for Posh & Becks
Call it a hat trick--David and Victoria Beckham are the proud parents of a third son.
The baby boy, whom the couple dubbed Cruz, was born Sunday in Madrid via Caesarean section. He weighed in at seven pounds, two ounces, and was said to be doing well, as was his mother.
"We've got a baby boy. His name is Cruz," David Beckham told reporters outside the hospital. "He is beautiful. He is in there with his brothers now, and he is very happy."
Cruz, the Spanish word for cross, may seem to be an unusual moniker to bestow on an infant, but one must remember that the Beckhams are already the parents of Brooklyn, age five, and Romeo, age two.
"It's just a name we liked. We found it hard this time, but we came up with a name that we both loved and stuck to it," Beckham said.
However, the British press has been having a field day with the name after language experts revealed that Cruz is generally used as an old-fashioned girl's name in Spanish.
"I think it is quite a stupid name, frankly," Lola Oria, a Spanish-language tutor at Oxford University, told the BBC.
"They will have problems in Spain because it will be seen as a name for girls...It is quite a strange thing to do to a little boy."
The Beckhams, Britain's most celebrated couple, live in Spain, where David Beckham, one of the world's highest-paid soccer players, has played for Real Madrid since 2003.
Victoria Beckham, formerly known as Posh Spice, initially intended to remain behind in England to pursue a solo singing career, but changed her mind shortly after allegations surfaced last year that her husband had had an affair with his personal assistant, Rebecca Loos.
David Beckham dismissed the claims as "ludicrous." Just a few months later, the couple seemingly affirmed that all was well when they announced the impending birth of baby number three.
