Paris Can't Get "Lost"

Lost found a way to lose American Idol. Now, it's working on Paris Hilton.

In its first matchup against Hilton's fame-enabling Fox reality series, the ABC castaway drama helped strand The Simple Life: Interns in 54th place for the TV week ended Sunday, per Nielsen Media Research.

Simple Life sucked in 8.6 million viewers, well off its premiere, in its new 8:30 Wednesday time slot. By comparison, a bullet-firing, body-dropping Lost hooked 19.5 million (sixth place) over the 8-9 p.m. hour.

Depleted castaway ranks or no, the ABC freshman drama has stayed strong, whether it's up against Hilton or American Idol.

Fox moved the Wednesday edition of Idol to 9 p.m.--and out of Lost's way--as of last week.

The singing competition was no worse for the road trip, averaging 26.1 million (third place), and dropping its new rival, ABC's Alias, to 32nd place (10.8 million). Overall, ratings for Wednesday's Idol are up eight percent from last season.

Tuesday's Idol is doing even better, up about 15 percent so far from last year. Last week's tense Hollywood audition installment was watched by 28.8 million--tops among all prime-time shows.

Lost, meanwhile, looks to build on its already big season with the upcoming offing of a familiar prime-time face. Perhaps Paris should watch her back.

Elsewhere:

Not only did ABC's Desperate Housewives (fourth place, 22.3 million) mop up CBS' Grammys telecast (eighth place, 18.8 million) on Sunday, the Alphabet's Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (13th place, 16.5 million) hammered away at the award show in the 8 p.m. hour.
In the battle of the Grammy arrival shows, E!'s Live from the Red Carpet outdid cable rivals TV Guide Channel and MTV by wide margins. (E! Online is a division of E! Networks.)
Fox's House (15th place, 15 million viewers--and climbing in the post-Idol Tuesday time slot) owes Simon Cowell a beer.
Mr. Big, indeed. Chris Noth's return to Law & Order: Criminal Intent juiced the NBC drama by a million viewers--up to 18th place, 13.5 million.
Two buzz-worthy newsmagazine interviews failed to produce buzz-worthy numbers. CBS' 60 Minutes sitdown with ex-baseball star/chemist Jose Canseco was watched by 12.8 million (22nd place); ABC's 20/20 confab with subpoenaed Michael Jackson witness Corey Feldman was witnessed by 9.3 million (44th place).
CBS' The Amazing Race 6 went out in style--24th place, 12.6 million.
The final five minutes of Fox's The O.C. (the ones with the girl-smooching) was watched by, rough estimate, a bajillion hormone-raging teenagers. The episode as a whole averaged 8.1 million (60th place).
The 100th episode of WB's Gilmore Girls was marked with a wedding, and a healthy 74th place finish (6.3 million).
Fox's Arrested Development isn't exactly helping its cause--82nd place, 5.6 million.

Overall, CBS rode the Grammys and CSI (second place, 27.9 million) to a sweeps victory in viewers (13.5 million), and a first-place demographic tie with Fox.

Fox just edged NBC for second place in viewers (10.43 million to 10.42); NBC just edged ABC for third place (10.42 million to 10.14 million).

NBC couldn't edge anybody among its coveted 18-to-49-year-old viewers--it ran fourth in that race.

The WB, led by 7th Heaven (71st place, 6.9 million viewers--and renewed for a record 10th season for a family drama), bested UPN, 3.6 million to 3.2 million.

Here's a rundown of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. American Idol (Tuesday), Fox, 28.8 million viewers
2. CSI, CBS, 27.9 million viewers
