Vince Neil's Effed-Up New Year
Perhaps Vince Neil needs a vernacular coach to augment his lifestyle makeover.
The M?tley Cr?e frontman and current subject of VH1's reality show Remaking: Vince Neil just can't seem to stop using the F-word as an adjective, noun, adverb and modifier.
During a special live New Year's Eve broadcast of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Neil turned to Cr?e bandmate Tommy Lee and wished him a "Happy f---in' New Year."
Neil's F-bomb dropped live to all East Coast viewers; the offending word was edited out of the West Coast airing of the special.
Still, as of Tuesday, NBC hadn't received any calls complaining about Neil's profanity. But, following media inquiries, the Federal Communications Commission decided to launch a preliminary investigation.
However, even in the face of recent indecency crackdowns, it appears there will be little the FCC can do, since Neil's auld lang syne moment occurred so late. Broadcasting rules are more lax during the late-night "safe harbor," which runs from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m.
This is the second time in less than a year that NBC has let the F-bomb slip on a live broadcast.
The network irked the FCC and cultural conservatives when U2 lead singer Bono waxed poetic at last year's Golden Globe Awards using everyone's favorite four-letter word while accepting an award for Best Song, saying, "This is really, really f---ing brilliant!"
While NBC ultimately dodged heavy fines when the FCC ruled in October that Bono had used the F-word only as "a modifier," CBS was not so lucky it came to Janet Jackson's Super Bowl nipplegate fiasco.
In September, the five-member commission formally fined 20 CBS-owned television stations $27,500 each. The network is fighting the fines.
The backlash has engendered such skittishness among broadcasters that several ABC affiliates bailed on a Veteran's Day airing of Saving Private Ryan in November due to fear of possible FCC fines. The commission ultimately ruled that no fines would be levied for those stations that did air the film.
As for NBC, Leno's Tonight Show is usually taped and doesn't have to worry about such problems. But on those rare occasions when he does air live, he hasn't used a delay--that's likely to change.
Neil, meanwhile, is ready to launch a reunion tour with the whole Cr?e crew. For followers of the band, the "Shout at the Devil" singer's user of the F-word is no surprise. At a press conference announcing the reunion, Neil answered practically every question with some form of the word. The tour kicks off Feb. 17 in Fort Lauderdale.
In other M?tley news, Neil announced he will marry girlfriend Lia Gerardini Sunday at a private ceremony in Las Vegas. The wedding will be conducted by Neil's Surreal Life costar MC Hammer.
When Hammer asks if Neil takes Gerardini as his bride, anyone want to lay odds on whether Neil replies, "I f----in' do?"
