Ashlee Gets Live in '05
Ashlee Simpson could soon be doing her patented hoedown at a venue near you.
The pop star has unveiled plans for her first headlining tour, which will feature her performing live--or so she promises--in 35 cities across North America. The jaunt kicks off Feb. 18 at Los Angeles' Universal Amphitheater, with Simpson headlining medium to large sized venues, depending on the market, before wrapping in April with gigs in her native Texas. More shows are expected to be added.
Ashlee haters are no doubt hoping for another lip-synching meltdown ? la her Saturday Night Live disaster in October, but Simpson, who has since been going out of her way to sing live anytime a camera or reporter is within earshot, hopes the tour will reestablish credibility with fans.
The launch of the tour not so coincidentally will correspond to the second season of her MTV reality show, the Ashlee Simpson Show, which is slated to begin airing in January. The first season of the show made the brunette an instant star and helped push her first album, Autobiography, to a number one debut on the Billboard charts in July.
The 20-year-old's debut CD is again climbing Billboard's pop charts--with a sales increase of 61 percent last week off the strength of her new single, "La La." Autobiography has already been certified triple platinum by the RIAA.
Based on those sales, Jessica's baby sister picked up an award for Top Female Newcomer at last week's Billboard Music Awards in Las Vegas. Backstage at the event, she again tried to spin her way out of her embarrassing SNL appearance. "If you're ever feeling nervous or unsure of yourself," she joked to reporters, "I have a little trick--it's called the Texas Jig."
Simpson is planning an all-out media assault in the coming weeks in advance of her tour. She will perform on the Tonight Show Dec. 17 before throwing down three songs on ABC's Dick Clark-less New Years Rockin' Eve Dec. 31.
In January, Simpson will take a page from Janet Jackson's playbook, nipple shield excepted, by performing a halftime show at the NCAA football championship game at the Orange Bowl.
