Givens' Crash Charges Dropped Again
Once again, Robin Givens has been let off the hook.
Charges against the former Head of the Class star, who ran over and seriously injured an elderly woman in Florida last January, were dismissed for a second time on Tuesday.
Givens had stopped at a red light and turned the corner when she struck Maria Antonia Alcover, just as the 89-year-old woman was about to step onto the sidewalk after crossing the busy street.
Alcover was reportedly knocked backwards by the impact, and the rear wheel of Givens' Mercedes SUV ran over her right leg, nearly severing her foot.
A police spokeswoman said that Givens did not realize what had happened until she was flagged down by witnesses.
Once the '80s sitcom star realized what had transpired, she stayed with Alcover until emergency crews arrived.
Doctors managed to save Alcover's foot, but it was unclear if the Florida senior, who emigrated from Cuba in 1963, would ever walk again.
Police ticketed Givens for failing to use due care with a pedestrian in the crosswalk--an infraction that carries less than a $70 fine.
Charges against the former Mrs. Mike Tyson were initially dismissed in September after three police officers called upon to testify in the case did not show up for the hearing.
The state attorney's office refiled the case, but charges were dismissed for a second time Tuesday, after it was determined that the Miami police officers who attended the hearing did not witness the accident and could not testify to its cause. A civilian witness did not make the court date.
Neither Givens, nor Alcover attended the hearing.
Had Givens been convicted, she could have lost her driver's license and faced a fine of up to $500.
Givens still faces a civil suit filed by Alcover, who is seeking unspecified damages in her auto negligence suit. Givens' sister, who owned the car that struck Alcover, is also named in the suit. Trial in the case is scheduled to begin Jan. 3.
