Grammy Nominations Go West

Kanye West was "robbed" at the American Music Awards. On Tuesday, he found his reward, nominated for a field-best 10 Grammy Awards.

The rapper's The College Dropout will vie for Album of the Year against Ray Charles' Genius Loves Company, Green Day's American Idiot, Alicia Keys' The Diary of Alicia Keys and Usher's Confessions.

Overall, Usher and Keys are up for eight Grammys each (in part, thanks to their collaboration, "My Boo"); the late Charles, seven.

Newcomer West is a contender for Best New Artist and Song of the Year, for his breakthrough hit, "Jesus Walks." He dominated the rap categories, picking up five nominations there.

At the American Music Awards last month, West grumbled he was "definitely robbed" when he failed to make good on even one of his three nominations.

On Tuesday, the 27-year-old producer turned performer understandably was in a better mood, helping announce the Grammy field in a televised ceremony from the Henry Fonda Music Box Theater in Hollywood.

"I couldn't even get a record deal...To come and get 10 Grammy nominations...I don't even know what to say," West told E! "The best thing is for me to keep my mouth shut."

About the only key category that West didn't venture into was Record of the Year. The Blake Eyed Peas' stadium-standard "Let's It Started," the Ray Charles and Norah Jones duet, "Here We Go Again," Green Day's title track, "American Idiot," Los Lonely Boys' "Heaven" and Usher's ubiquitous "Yeah!" are the hopeful singles there.

The other nominees for Song of the Year (an honor for the songwriter) are: John Mayer, for "Daughters"; Keys, for "If I Ain't Got You"; Tim Nichols and Craig Wiseman, for the Tim McGraw hit, "Live Like You Were Dying"; and, Hoobastank's main men, Daniel Estrin and Douglas Robb, for "The Reason." West's nod for "Jesus Walks" is a shared nomination with cowriter C. Smith.

Charles, who succumbed to liver cancer last June at the age of 73, was as much a force in death as in life, when he won 12 competitive Grammys. Genius Loves Company, released posthumously, was particularly strong in the pop categories, picking up three nominations, including Pop Vocal Album of the Year.

The Grammys were kind to other veteran acts: The venerable punkers of Green Day were nominated for six awards overall, including Rock Album of the Year for American Idiot.
Country queen Loretta Lynn, who last won a Grammy 33 years ago, was back in the game with Van Lear Rose, her Jack White-produced comeback that earned five nominations--Best Country Album, among them.
Prince, a four-time Grammy winner, can add to his collection with five more nominations for Musicology, posing competition in the Best R&B Album category for Keys (but, oddly, not Usher, whose Confessions was shut out of that race).
Norah Jones, the Grammy queen of 2002 with five wins for Come Away with Me, scored five nominations for her follow-up, Feels Like Home, and her contribution to Charles' Genius Loves Company. Another duet, "Creepin' In," with Dolly Parton, earned Jones a Best Country Collaboration nod.
Beach Boy Brian Wilson scored two nominations, including one for Best Pop Vocal Album, for finally finishing his 1960s opus with Brian Wilson Presents Smile. Notably, the Beach Boys have never, ever won a competitive Grammy as a group.
Rock legends Paul McCartney and Eric Clapton were nominated in the Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals category for "Something," a track off the George Harrison tribute, Concert for George.

Perhaps even better than being a seasoned act was being a dead act. In addition to Ray Charles racking up nomination after nomination, Johnny Cash (deceased 2004) and Joe Strummer (deceased 2002) picked up one for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals for their duet, "Redemption Song."

Living, breathing new acts had their day, too. Facing Kanye West in the Best New Artist race are: Los Lonely Boys, Maroon5, Joss Stone and "Redneck Woman" Gretchen Wilson.

Wilson earned four nominations overall, including one for Best Country Album (Here for the Party). Singer-songwriter Stone is up for three, including Best Pop Vocal Album (Mind, Body & Soul).

Super Bowl flasher Janet Jackson, banned from last February's telecast, should start picking out her malfunction-proof wardrobe today: She's up for two Grammys for her commercial bust, Damita Jo.

Controversy didn't deter Grammy voters from nominating R. Kelly, still dogged by a child pornography case, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for "Happy People."

Britney Spears, meanwhile, eeked out one nomination for "Toxic" in the newly created Best Dance Recording category.

With 107 categories overall, there's room to nominate just about everybody--well, except for singers from American Idol.

Unusual Grammy suspects include: John Lithgow (up for Best Spoken Word Album for Children for Carnival of the Animals), Steve Martin (Best Spoken Word Album contender for The Pleasure of My Company) and former President Bill Clinton (Best Spoken Word Album candidate for My Life). Clinton picked up his first Grammy last year for lending a voice to the children's album, Prokofiev: Peter and the Wolf/Beintus: Wolf Tracks. His wife, U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, picked up her hardware in 1996 for the books-on-tape version of her title, It Takes a Village.

The 47th annual Grammy Awards are to be presented Feb. 13 in a live CBS telecast from Los Angeles' Staples Center.
