Young Buck Ready to Surrender
Young Buck picked up a trophy at Monday night's Vibe Music Awards. Then the G-Unit rapper picked up an arrest warrant.
Buck, whose real name is David Darnell Brown, was fingered by police as one of the knife-wielding men who allegedly stabbed another man during the Vibe Awards violence.
An arrest warrant was issued for the rising hip-hop star Tuesday. On Thursday, his New York-based lawyer said Young Buck was ready to turn himself in.
Scott Leemon released a statement saying his client would "surrender in the near future and then be released on bail."
"I want it to be very clear 'Young Buck' was not running from anyone," Leemon says. "Upon learning the he was wanted by the Santa Monica Police Department, we, as his attorneys, immediately contacted the Santa Monica Police and assured them that Mr. Brown would appear at a mutually convenient time for processing."
Leemon wouldn't say exactly when that time would be.
Apparently, the cops aren't sure, either.
"I have no idea when he will surrender," Santa Monica Police Lieutenant Frank Fabrega told E! Online Thursday. "I just know that our detectives have been talking with his lawyer and say he is planning on it."
According to Fabrega, Buck's bail has already been set at $500,000.
Buck is one of three men wanted for the stabbing of the man who started Monday's mayhem: 26-year-old Jimmy James Johnson, who sucker-punched Dr. Dre right before the renowned rapper-producer was set to receive a lifetime achievement award.
Police say they have video of the Nashville-born Buck, a Dre prot?g?, lunging at Johnson. Two other men also pounced, but so far they have not been identified.
Johnson, a parolee whose motive for striking Dre remains unknown, was hospitalized for a collapsed lung and is listed in stable condition. (Johnson apparently was unaware it is Dre day everyday in L.A.)
Police plan on questioning him once he has recovered, and he will likely be rung up on an assault charge.
The SMPD also reportedly plans on questioning Dr. Dre, who has yet to respond to their request.
Meanwhile, Buck's mother wants the world to know that her son is still a nice boy.
Audrey Horn, the rapper's mother, told the Associated Press Thursday that she was sure her son was "going to turn himself in."
She went on to embarrass her boy, by telling how she wants her son to be more like G-rated rapper Will Smith--the surefire kiss of death for any aspiring hardcore hip-hopper.
"I'm still constantly telling him to keep it clean like Will Smith and that kind of thing," Horn told AP.
Buck, who has been rapping since he was 12, released his first solo album, Straight Outta Ca$hville, on Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. The CD debuted at number three on the Billboard charts in August, and his latest single, "Shorty Wanna Ride," is holding its own on the magazine's hip-hop and R&B chart.
As a member of 50 Cent's G-Unit posse, Buck shared in the Vibe Award for Best Group Monday.
