Patty Duke's Ticker Trouble

Patty Duke has gotten a heart tune-up.

The Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress underwent a single heart bypass procedure Wednesday.

Duke, 57, is in fair condition in the intensive care unit at Kootenai Medical Center near Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, where she shares a ranch with husband, Michael Pearce.

Duke went under the knife early Wednesday so doctors could fix a seriously blocked artery.

A spokeswoman for the hospital's heart center said Pearce wanted fans to know that everything went well.

Duke is expected to make a rapid recovery.

Earlier this spring, Duke was treated at the heart center and had a stent inserted into one of her arteries to improve blood flow.

In 2002, Duke was admitted to Kootenai after getting knocked down by one of her horses, cracking her skull and sustaining a concussion.

Duke shot to fame at the age of 12 playing identical cousins in her mid-1960s sitcom, The Patty Duke Show. But it is her long association with the Helen Keller-based The Miracle Worker that made her career.

Duke originated the role of the blind Keller on Broadway in 1959, at age 12, and then revisited the role for the 1962 movie version, which costarred Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan, Keller's put-upon teacher. Duke, at 16, received the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and became the youngest person up to that point to win an Academy Award.

Two decades later, Duke went on to snag an Emmy for the 1979 TV-movie version, but with a twist--she won for playing the Sullivan part. Duke also won Emmys for the 1970 TV movie My Sweet Charlie and the 1976 miniseries Captains and the Kings.

Aside from her Miracle Worker duties, Duke played herself in the 1990 adaptation of her autobiography, Call Me Anna.

She is also the mother of actors Mackenzie Astin (The Facts of Life) and Sean Astin (The Lord of the Rings, The Goonies, Rudy), whom she fathered with ex-hubby John Astin of Addams Family fame. Duke and Astin split in 1985.

She met Pearce while making the TV flick A Time to Triumph and they tied the knot in 1986. The couple adopted a son, Kevin, in 1989.
